Burt Glinn Sold at Auction Prices

Photographer, b. 1925 - d. 2008

American photographer Burt Glinn, who began his career with Life magazine before joining Magnum and who covered events such as Fidel Castro's Cuba campaign and the Battle of Sinai, died Wednesday in New York aged 82. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Burt Glinn served in the United States Army between 1943 and 1946, before studying literature at Harvard University, where he edited and photographed for the Harvard Crimson college newspaper. From 1949 to 1950, Glinn worked for Life magazine before becoming a freelancer.

Glinn became an associate member of Magnum in 1951, along with Eve Arnold and Dennis Stock - the first Americans to join the young photo agency - and a full member in 1954. He made his mark with spectacular color series on the South Seas, Japan, Russia, Mexico and California. In 1959 he received the Mathew Brady Award for Magazine Photographer of the Year from the University of Missouri.

In collaboration with the writer Laurens van der Post, Glinn published A Portrait of All the Russias and A Portrait of Japan. His reportages have appeared in Esquire, Geo, Travel and Leisure, Fortune, Life and Paris-Match. He has covered the Sinai War, the US Marine invasion of Lebanon, and Fidel Castro's takeover of Cuba. In the 1990s he completed an extensive photo essay on the topic of medical science.

Versatile and technically brilliant, Glinn is one of Magnum's great corporate and advertising photographers. He has received numerous awards for his editorial and commercial photography, including the Best Book of Photographic Reporting from Abroad from the Overseas Press Club and the Best Print Ad of the Year from the Art Directors Club of New York. Glinn has served as president of the American Society of Media Photographers. He was president of Magnum between 1972 and 1975, and was re-elected to the post in 1987. He died in 2008. BURT GLINN Civil Rights Little Rock High 1957

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

BURT GLINN. Little Rock Central High School, 1957. 8.5x13.5" gelatin silver print. Printed c. 1957. Stamped in black ink on print verso: E.U. Population / Racisme; stamped in black ink: Please Credit / Burt Glinn / Magnum Photos Inc / [0?] West 47th Street / New York 19, N.Y.; inscribed in pencil: 57-10-3 / 35; inscribed in pencil: PF94658-111. The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine black students who enrolled at formerly all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in September 1957. Their attendance at the school was a test of Brown v. Board of Education, a landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling that declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional. On September 4, 1957, the first day of classes at Central High, Governor Orval Faubus called in the Arkansas National Guard to block the black students' entry into the high school. Later that month, President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent in federal troops to escort the Little Rock Nine into the school. It drew national attention to the civil rights movement. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Burt Glinn (1925-2008) served in the United States Army between 1943 and 1946, before studying literature at Harvard University, where he edited and photographed for the Harvard Crimson college newspaper. In 1959, he received the Mathew Brady Award for Magazine Photographer of the Year from the University of Missouri. In collaboration with the writer Laurens van der Post, Glinn published A Portrait of All the Russias and A Portrait of Japan. His reportages have appeared in Esquire, Geo, Travel and Leisure, Fortune, LIFE, and Paris-Match. He has covered the Sinai War, the US Marine invasion of Lebanon, and Fidel Castro's takeover of Cuba. In the 1990s, he completed an extensive photo essay on the topic of medical science. Versatile and technically brilliant, Glinn was one of Magnum's great corporate and advertising photographers. He received numerous awards for his editorial and commercial photography, including the Best Book of Photographic Reporting from Abroad from the Overseas Press Club and the Best Print Ad of the Year from the Art Directors Club of New York. Glinn has served as president of the American Society of Media Photographers. He was president of Magnum between 1972 and 1975 and was re-elected to the post in 1987. Burt Glinn Original Time Life Magazine Photograph

      Est: $300 - $600

For auction in this lot is a Burt Glinn original Time Life Magazine photograph of a Mint Bar & Grill patron, perusing a collection of Charles M. Russel prints for sale. The photo was part of a Time Life series, which came about as Montana locals were fundraising to keep original Charles M. Russell works in Montana. A November 1952 issue of Life Magazine states "At first he (Charles Russell) gave his sketches away, but in the long winters when he was out of a job and money, he learned to trade his art for food and supplies. his steadiest patron was the owner of the Mint saloon. In exchange for a drawing, Russell could get a drink of whiskey. For an oil, he was rewarded with a full quart.". When a Texas oil magnate purchased the collection for $300,000, Montanan's realized they had taken for granted the fact that they had a strong hold on the only collection which could rival the renowned Frederic Remington's works. The photograph carries signifigance as the Mint bar advertises the sale of Russell prints to re-acquire the collection that they had so recently sold off. The original photographs offered in this auction were gifted directly by Glinn to John Quigly (late father of the consigner, and creator of Helena, MT's Frontier Town), as the consigner states "He and my wild Irish dad had a good time while Glinn was at Frontier Town on assignment". The photograph shows exceptional clarity, and depth in printing, and is stamped numerous times on the back claiming capture by Glinn, and ownership of Time Life Magazine - not for reprint. The photograph shows good condition overall, with slight edge wear to the bottom right corner. The photograph is preservation shrink wrapped on acid-free mat board. The photograph itself measures 9 1/4" x 6 1/4".

Burt Glinn Original Time Life Magazine Photograph

      Est: $750 - $1,500

This lot includes an original Burt Glenn, Time Life Magazine photograph taken in October 1952. The photo is from the November 10th, 1952 series, but remained un-used in the project. The series came about when a Texas oil magnate purchased the Great Falls, Montana Mint Bar & Grills personal Charles M. Russell collection for upwards of $300,000. The photograph shows a Butte, Montana livestock auction, in which local Montanan's donated cattle to raise funds to purchase back the original Russell works. Fundraising for the cause was a state wide cause - The Time Life article states that "citizens drummed up funds by sponsoring cattle auctions, rodeos, lotteries, Wild West theatricals, and barn dances", it continues to say "Newspapers and radio stations joined in the campaign and Russell canvassers made the rounds of schools and houses, collecting contributions in outsized Western hats". One of the large contributors of the fund was the late John R. Quigley - father of the consigner of the photograph collection, and creator and previous owner of "Frontier Town", an attraction just outside of Helena, Montana. The consigner goes on to say "He (Burt Glinn) and my wild Irish dad had a good time while Glinn was at Frontier Town on assignment", giving reason to be gifted the photographs. The photograph is accompanied by the original November 10th, 1952 issue of Life Magazine, in which an article is written about the efforts. Overall, the photograph shows good condition overall, but has some reasonable creasing at the bottom. The photo is marked on the back with numerous stamps, one claiming capture by Burt Glinn, and one stating ownership by Time Life Magazine, not to be reproduced. The photo is preservation shrink wrapped to acid-free mat board. The photograph masures 13" x 10 5/8".
