John Glover,  British 1767-1849-  Gold Rill Beck, Ullswater;  pencil and oil on canvas, 71.5 x 90.5 cm.  Provenance:  The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson.  Note:  John Glover studied under William Payne (1755/60-c.1830) and began showcasing his oil paintings at the Royal Academy in 1795, where his works garnered positive attention, often being compared favourably to those of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). In his pursuit of innovative methods to depict light and atmosphere, Glover pioneered a technique involving a split brush for painting foliage, a style evident in the trees and landscape of this current work. The picturesque composition, the dappled treatment of the middle ground and rendering of foliage are all typical of Glover.  Glover frequently visited the Lake District, embarking on sketching and painting tours to Cumberland and Westmoreland from 1793. The farm he rented at Blowick, along with the expanse of Ullswater and its winding tributary, Gold Rill Beck, are prominently featured in many of his paintings and drawings. An example depicting this landscape was exhibited with the Society of Painters in Water Colours (SPWC) in 1806. Glover is also known to have rendered this composition in watercolour; an example was presented at Bonhams Australia, 26 June 2019 (lot 76). Glover travelled to Australia in 1831, at the age of 64, becoming one of the most influential and celebrated landscape painters of the country.  The attribution of the present work to John Glover was confirmed by the late David Hansen through private communication in November 2023.

Chapman frame: William Wilson, Launceston PROVENANCE Thomas and Catherine Chapman, Sunnyside, New Town, Hobart Thence by descent George S. Chapman, Hobart, acquired in 1884 Thence by descent George R. Chapman, Hobart Thence by descent G. Robin Chapman, Hobart Thence by descent Geoff Chapman, Hobart Thence by descent Peter Chapman, Hobart Estate of the above ESSAY This oil painting was produced in the later years of John Glover’s life, following his long and successful career as a landscape artist and teacher in England and his emigration to Van Diemen’s Land in 1831, aged sixty-four. There he had turned his attention to interpreting the Australian bush, both as it had been managed by the Aboriginal custodians, and as it was being transformed by British newcomers for pastoral and agricultural purposes. Throughout these years he also continued to paint far-distant scenes, based on recollections of his travels throughout Britain and Europe, prompted by earlier sketches contained in the 104 small sketchbooks that he had brought with him.1   This tranquil view, possibly Italian, along a country road is interrupted by a steep bank of trees of varying ages and forms. Framed by overhanging branches, a woman and child walk in shadow, soon to emerge towards us into open land and sunshine. Despite the posthumous title Study of oak trees, c.1840 the landscape have recently been revealed after being hidden for decades by layers of varnish. It now glows in the manner Glover originally intended.   This painting has a direct provenance from Thomas Chapman and his wife, who arrived in Van Diemen’s Land in late 1841. This is around the date this painting was created although it is unknown when it entered their collection. A merchant by trade and an opponent of transportation, Chapman became a politician and subsequently the fifth Premier of Tasmania (1861–63). Study of oak trees passed down the family to Peter Chapman, a respected scholar and teacher of Tasmanian and Australian history who died earlier this year. His numerous publications included an article on ‘John Glover’s migration to Tasmania’.3   The painting remains in its original William Wilson frame. Wilson was a Launceston-based ‘Carver & Gilder, Looking Glass, Picture Frame and Composition Ornament Manufacturer, Upholsterer’4 and ‘manufacturer of every description of Ornamental Furniture’, who arrived in the colony in 1842. Less well-known than his Hobart counterpart Robin Hood, Wilson created elegant frames for Glover, Frederick Strange and Robert Dowling among others.5   1. 'Hill and I were the whole of the evening looking over the two books he [Glover] had placed before us. He told us that he had 104 of such…’ G.T.W.B. Boyes (ed. Peter Chapman), The Diaries and Letters of G. T. W. B. Boyes: Volume 1 1820-1832, Melbourne: Oxford University Press, 1985, pp. 421 – 22 2. Experts John McPhee and David Hansen have not previously seen collage used. The quality of the painted figures suggests that these are by Glover. 3. His immigration to Van Diemen’s Land at the age of sixty-three is often recounted, yet comparatively little attention is paid to his long and successful career in England as an artist, exhibitor, teacher and contemporary of John Constable and J.M.W. Turner. In both England and Australia, Glover focused principally on picturesque landscapes and verdant rural surroundings, but he painted the occasional cityscape, as with this large and luminous watercolour of the Thames in 1808. Glover associated with artistic and literary circles and is known to be a close reader of poetry; early sketchbook pages include many quotes and verses. William Wordsworth was one poet whom he read, and this tranquil scene corresponds closely with his sonnet Composed upon Westminster Bridge, 3 September 1802, which was first published in 1807. Earth has not any thing to show more fair: Dull would he be of soul who could pass by A sight so touching in its majesty: This City now doth, like a garment, wear The beauty of the morning; silent, bare, Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie Open unto the fields, and to the sky; All bright and glittering in the smokeless air. Never did sun more beautifully steep In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill; Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep! The river glideth at his own sweet will: Dear God! the very houses seem asleep; And all that mighty heart is lying still!   While Wordsworth is describing the calm of early morning, Glover has positioned himself on London Bridge, looking towards Blackfriars Bridge, and is thus facing west, into a setting, rather than rising sun. The crowded port of London lies downstream, east of this view. Here we see only a small number of water craft, mostly moored at the wharves, the river workers ending their day’s toil. This view harks to a pictorial device used extensively by the French artist Claude Lorrain (1600 – 1682), looking across a seaport towards a low sun, and to the reflections and shadows cast upon the waters.1 Claude had many British imitators; Glover was not the only one to be known, but may be the best remembered, widely dubbed as the ‘the English Claude’. In this expansive scene Glover’s view is not framed, as so often, by trees or geological features but rather is punctuated by the imposing and distinctive dome of St Pauls Cathedral on the right, and Watt’s shot tower, for bullet manufacturing, on the left, built less than twenty years earlier and the cutting edge of military technology.2 Here then, we see both the power of religion and of industrial and military might, at the heart of a metropolis immersed in the long Napoleonic war, yet simultaneously expanding its imperial control around the globe. Both London and Blackfriars bridges have since been rebuilt; railway, road and walking bridges now interrupt this view, including the Millennium Bridge which leads to Bankside, the (reconstructed) Globe Theatre and Tate Modern.3 1. See for example, Glover’s Conway Castle, 1796, in Hansen, D.,   John Glover and the Colonial Picturesque, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart, 2004, cat. no. 8, p. 140. 2. Glover appears to position the shot tower before Blackfriars Bridge; other prints firmly locate it west of the bridge. John Glover, OWS,  British 1767-1849-  Cattle watering in a river, North Wales;  pencil and grey wash on paper, 8.5 x 16.5 cm.  Provenance:  with Thomas Agnew & Sons, London [no.20933].  Private Collection, UK.  Note: The son of a Leicestershire farmer, Glover was appointed writing master at a school in Westmorland in 1786, and eight years later became drawing master in Lichfield, Staffordshire. He was a pupil of William Payne (1760-1830), and in 1795 began exhibiting oil paintings at the Royal Academy, which were favourably received compared to those of Turner, much to the irritation of John Constable. A founding member of the Old Water-Colour Society, Glover exhibited regularly before he emigrated to Tasmania in 1831, where he came to be known as the father of Australian landscape painting. There are several known drawings and paintings that Glover made in and around North Wales and the present work is a particularly fine example of the subject.

ESSAY When the eminent landscape artist John Glover emigrated from England to Van Diemen’s Land, he was accompanied by his wife and eldest son, John Richardson Glover.1 He was sixty-four; John Richardson forty-one. Arriving in Hobart Town in April 1831, they were reunited with his three other sons, who had begun farming on palawa land two years earlier. In 1832 John was granted land by the Nile River in northern Tasmania where they built their house Patterdale. Here he re-established his painting practice, ably supported by John Richardson as studio assistant and farmer. As we know well, John became Tasmania’s most renowned colonial landscape artist. An art teacher in England, John Richardson’s own artistic output in Van Diemen’s Land was limited, and he is best known now for pen and wash drawings recording local buildings and letters describing of their life and activities, significant documents about colonial Tasmanian settlement.  This small sketchbook draws upon the talents and activities of both artists. It is one of the extant examples showing John Richardson’s close artistic relationship with his father, and the vital role that sketching, copying and re-using earlier visual records played before the development of photography. The book contains thirty-nine (previously forty-four) small monochromatic landscapes – the features outlined in pen and ink and enhanced with even tonal washes, which evoke the atmosphere and luminosity of the Italian vistas depicted. A hand-written index, titled Views in Italy, provides locations for the topographical vistas: St Peter’s in Rome, Lake Nemi, the Taro River, Suza and so on.2 Yet John Richardson is not known to have visited Italy. Instead, the numbers at the lower left of each drawing correspond with sketches in one of the 104 sketchbooks John had brought with him to Van Diemen’s Land. John is known to have been an inveterate sketcher and traveller, often fitting multiple sketches per page. His pupil Edward Price wrote: ‘His knowledge was almost entirely derived from the Study of Nature and not from Works of Art. His numerous Sketchbooks are full of Indian Ink drawings made at all hours… Nothing escaped his observation and he never lost an opportunity of noting down anything that was worth remembering.’3 During 1818 John had travelled to Italy, seeing in the flesh picturesque views and edifices that he would have previously only studied in engravings and other tourists’ art. His only surviving Italian sketchbook, Sketchbook 87, is held by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart and records some of the evocative landscapes, churches and Roman ruins that he had seen. It is well known that John called upon his sketchbooks throughout his life: in 1835 at Patterdale, for example, he painted My last view of Italy, looking from the Alps over Suza (Art Gallery of New South Wales). Upon John’s death in 1849, his sketchbooks were distributed between his three surviving sons. Sketchbook 87 was given to John Richardson, and he selected forty-four views to copy for his, or another’s, further use, possibly before sale.4 A Whatman watermark, dated 1849, shows that the sketchbook was made no earlier than the year of John’s death. 1. Contemporary statements suggest that debts accrued by John Richardson influenced their move. 2. Sketches numbered 5 – 8 and 12 are now missing from the book. 3.
