    • JOSEF GOČÁR 1880 - 1945 - A CUBIST BUFFET
      Jun. 08, 2023

      JOSEF GOČÁR 1880 - 1945 - A CUBIST BUFFET

      Est: -

The unique cubist buffet comes from the furnishings of the functionalist villa in the Baba colony of the famous Czech historian, Professor Julius Glücklich, which was designed for him by Josef Gočár (Na Babě 2, Jarní Street, No.1798 /3). The library represents an extremely rare example of the timeless world design of one of the most significant designers and architects of Czech Cubism, Josef Gočár, whose cabinets, bookcases and showcases, especially from the first years of Cubist work, can be considered almost as sculptures in their own right. Under the superstructure of the glass display case there are a total of three lockable drawers above which there are pull-out storage panels; underneath there is a door with a rich rosewood pattern. The desk for V. V. Štech from 1914 has the same cubist star fittings: see the catalogue Czech Cubism - Architecture and Design 1910-1925, p. 204. In addition to the unique design, the masterful quality of the furniture's workmanship can also be highlighted. The same buffet is in the MP collections under inventory number 54793. Published in Lukeš P. et al.: Josef Gočár, Titanic, 2010. p. 377.

Chairs: 90 x 50 x 51 cm Armchairs: 86 x 75 x 66 cm Buffet: 180 x 162 x 70 cm Showcase: 151.5 x 95 x 38.5 cm Table: 80.5 x 69.5 cm Chandelier: 110 x 44 cm The exceptional dining set with pair of armchairs and a table represents an extremely rare example of the timeless design of one of the most prominent designers and architects of Czech Cubism, Josef Gočár. The dominant feature of the whole ensemble, a massive buffet, with the folding of the lower drawers and doors to the interior, represents Gočár's early Cubist work, an unprecedented synthesis between the departing Art Nouveau in the form of decently decorated fittings and revolutionary Cubism. Inside the glazed crystalline superstructure, a lock to the display case is ingeniously hidden behind the central door. Six chairs with rounded backs resembling a winged chair with a typical cubist inner bend of the legs. The dining table is a sofa bed. Showcase with three drawers and geometrically designed legs. The design of the pair of armchairs is reminiscent of dining chairs, a perimeter-glazed table and opening tables. In such a form, the preserved unit occurs very rarely. The ensemble comes from a family of descendants of Dr. Trapl, for whom Josef Gočár designed interior equipment. The "robustness" of the furniture is comparable to the furnishing of Josef Gočár's own apartment between 1912-13. Consulted with the great-granddaughter of the architect Josef Gočár, Maria Fiřtová. Newly upholstered, restored. Photographs of the condition before restoration are available. Country: Bohemia

Like his colleagues Jan Kotera and Pavel Janák, he approached architecture and interior design with the aim of creating a single, coherent whole. In 1912 he co-founded Prazské umelecké dílny (Prague Art Workshops, PUD) with Janák and Josef Chochol. They went on to make exclusive pieces tailored for specific clients, particularly his friends and acquaintances, actors, artists and physicians. Furniture pieces and other design accessories are manufactured from high-quality solid wood, and are currently highly valued and included in the most important collections.
