Small Painting "The Temptation of Christ", 16th/17th Century

        Est: €1,600 - €2,000

Oil on copper Germany, end of the 16th/beginning of the 17th century Probably Heinrich Göding (1531-1606) - German court painter from Dresden Artist monogram lower right, "HG" Later inscription on the verso, "H. Goltzius [...] Harlem" 23 x 18.5 cm This small oil painting on copper dates towards the end of the 16υth or beginning of the 17υth century and was probably done by the German court painter Heinrich Göding (1531-1606), who was active in Dresden and painted large panel paintings and frescos as well as smaller oil paintings. This work shows Jesus in the desert in front of a rock wall. The devil appears to him and tries to tempt him. Two angels are approaching from the upper right corner to provide Jesus with food. The buildings of a town are seen in the bluish background. The work is in age-related condition. The left corner of the copper panel is broken off and there are two holes stamped on the upper edge for hanging the painting on a wall. The coat of paint has been restored in some areas and is protected by a varnish. The painting displays craquelure; the paint was applied somewhat unevenly. The artist monogram "HG" is found lower right on the recto. The verso was inscribed later, "H. Goltzius [...] 1616 Harlem" but this attribution can be excluded. The measurements are 23 x 18.5 cm.
