Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) German, Signed Limited Edition of Faust. This is Goethe’s Faust, a signed limited edition illustrated by Harry Clarke and translated from the German of John Anster. Faust was originally published in German, it is a tragic play written in two parts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and considered by many to be the greatest work of German literature. The first appearance of the work in print was published in 1790. In 1806, Goethe completed a preliminary version of what is now known as Part One; it was published in 1808, and he finished writing Faust, Part Two in 1831, a year before his death. The play is based on the medieval legend of a man who sold his soul to the devil, and Faust is like the one in the legend. He is highly successful, yet dissatisfied with life, which leads him to make a deal with the Devil, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. In Part One, which takes place in Heaven, Mephistopheles (Satan) makes a bet with God that he can lure God's favorite human - Faust - away from righteous pursuits, and the story goes on from there. Faust was just trying to learn everything that could be known, and he paid a price for it. Size: 10 3/4 X 8 1/2 in. #6491 . Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832) was a German polymath who is widely regarded as the greatest and most influential writer in German history. His works have had a profound influence on Western literary, political, and philosophical thought from the late 18th century to the present day. He was a poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, and theatre director, and his most notable work is probably Faust. (A polymath is someone who knows or wants to know everything.) The book is 1/4 bound, with a vellum spine decorated with gilt lettering, gray boards, hauntingly decorated endpapers, the limitation page says there were 1000 copies printed to be sold in Great Britain and 1000 copies printed for America, this is No. 591 of the American copies that were printed, it is signed by Harry Clarke, who illustrated the book, and It has the bookplate of William M. Conselman on the limitation page. It has a full- page color frontis and a decorated title page, the title page says it is from the German by John Anster, and it was published by Dingwall Rock Limited in New York; the book is undated, but it was published in 1925, according to WorldCat, and it was printed in Great Britain by Walter Lewis at the University Press in Cambridge. It also has a five-page Preface (7 - 11), a list of Illustrations on 13 and 14, with 21 illustrations altogether (13 black-and-white and 8 in color) and numerous black-and-white vignettes, there are 254 pages of text and one vignette after the last page of text, and the top edge is gilt. Harry Clarke (1889 - 1931) was an Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator, and a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. His first printed work was Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen, followed by illustrations for Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination, and his works in Faust were spectacularly haunting. John Anster (1793 - 1867) was a poet and professor who taught at Trinity College in Dublin, and he published fragments of a translation of Goethe’s Faust in 1820 that were later reprinted in England and America. William Marien Conselman (1896 - 1940) was an American screenwriter who also wrote newspaper comic strips under his Bill Conselman byline and sometimes under the pseudonym Frank Smiley. The book measures 10 3/4 x 8 1/2 and is in very good condition, with a good binding, clean pages and text, and beautiful illustrations, just a tad of soiling on the heel and crown of the spine, a dark spot on the front cover, and overall a very good copy of this limited edition of Goethe’s Faust. There are only eight copies that we found online on the rare book website we just, and they range in price from $600 to $1500.

Januar 1830, Großherzogl[ich] S[ächsische] Oberaufsicht über alle unmittelbaren Anstalten für Wissenschaft und Kunst“ sowie signiert „JWv Goethe", etwa 2 Jahre vor seinem Tod, adressiert an Friedrich Siegmund Voigt, Hofrat und Direktor des Botanischen Gartens in Jena: „Das Brennholz Deputat f[ü]r den botan[ischen] Garten das[elbst] betr[effend], im Brief berichtet Goethe zum einen, wie der Hofgärtner Baumann nach Weimar schreibt, damit zum Beheizen der Gewächshäuser aufgrund des strengen Winters ausnahmsweise mehr Geld zur Verfügung gestellt werden soll, die Verwaltung den Mehraufwand allerdings im Folgejahr durch Einsparungen ausgleichen müsse, zum anderen beklagt er sich, dass sich der Hofgärtner Baumann in Zukunft bei solchen Anliegen direkt an den Direktor des Botansichen Gartens wenden solle. Die beiden eigenhändig radierten Platten, die zu den wenigen Kostbarkeiten aus Goethes Studentenzeit in Leipzig zählen, in ganz ausgezeichneten, späteren Drucken mit breitem Rand. Die Todesanzeige des Dichters in der ersten Fassung: "Gestern Vormittags halb Zwölf Uhr starb mein geliebter Schwiegervater, der Grossherzogl. Sächsische wirkliche Geheime-Rath und Staatsminister JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE, nach kurzem Krankseyn, am Stickfluss in Folge eines zurückgeworfenen Katharrhalfiebers. Geisteskräftig und liebevoll bis zum letzten Hauche, schied er von uns im drei und achtzigsten Lebensjahre. Ottilie, von Goethe, geb. von Pogwisch, zugleich im Namen meiner drei Kinder, Walther, Wolf und Alma von Goethe." In der endgültigen Fassung lautet die Todesursache "in Folge eines nervös gewordenen Katharrhalfiebers", da die erste Fassung vom behandelnden Arzt als Kritik hätte aufgefasst werden können.

Goethe und Charlotte von Stein hatten sich im November 1775 kennengelernt. Es entwickelte sich eine enge und für beide höchst bedeutsame Freundschaft, in deren Verlauf Goethe rund 1700 Briefe an sie richtete. Als Hofdame von Herzogin Anna Amalia hatte sie 1764 den herzoglichen Stallmeister Gottlob Ernst Josias Friedrich von Stein geheiratet; seit 1793 war sie verwitwet.

Montiert auf ein Blatt gr.-8o (Montagereste am linken Rand). Leicht (ungleichmäßig) gebräunt. "Herrn Ober Bau Director Coudray wird auf morgen, d. 4. Apr. / zum Mittagessen / freundlichst eingeladen." Der mit Goethe befreundete Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray war von Carl August von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach 1816 als Großherzoglicher Oberbaudirektor verpflichtet worden und wurde vom Dichter bei Planungsschwierigkeiten unterstützt. In Goethes Tagebuch ist das Beisein von Coudray bei Tisch nicht vermerkt. Am Kopf des Untersetzpapiers eine Anmerkung von fremder Hand: "Von Frau Direktor … Coudray, als Geschenk erhalten im März 1874". In der Sophienausgabe nicht gedruckt.

Eichstädt, Redakteur der Anfang des Jahres gegründeten "Jenaischen Allgemeinen Literaturzeitung" (ALZ), diverse ausstehende Beiträge betreffend. – Goethe war die treibende Kraft der neuen Zeitung, die gegründet worden war, um nach Abwanderung der alten ALZ nach Halle der Universität Jena ein kritisches Organ zu erhalten. "Ew. Wohlgeb[oren] belieben nach einem beygesteckten Zettelchen" (von Schreiberhand) "eine Stelle meiner Recension zu verändern." – Der Zettel ist alt am rechten Rand montiert. "Doctor Schelle macht seine Sache ganz gut, nur will es mit dem Styl noch nicht recht fort, besonders anfangs. Es ist als wenn er sich erstlich warm schreiben müßte; dagegen ist der Nonconformist M.C. ein armer Teufel, von dem sich wenig erwarten läßt. Zeigen Sie mir doch einige frühere Recensionen, oder eine Schrift von ihm an, daß ich ihn näher kennen und beurtheilen lerne. Eschenmayers Recensent ist niemand anders als Werneburg in Göttingen." – Der eigentliche Rezensent von C. A. von Eschenmeyers Werk "Die Philosophie in ihrem Übergang zur Nichtphilosophie" sollte schließlich der Botaniker Ch. G. Nees von Esenbeck sein. "Lassen wir das philosophische Wesen immer noch ein wenig liegen. Ich habe allerley Gedanken, Hoffnungen und Aussichten. Heute ist Schlegel erinnert worden. / Eine spätere ausführlichere Beurtheilung des Augusteums kann recht gut angekündigt werden. Johannes Müller soll hoch leben und uns herzlich willkomen seyn …" Goethe unterzeichnet eigenhändig: "Muth und Geduld. / Goethe". Der Text auf dem "Zettelchen" lautet: "so wird z.B. das Wort fein so oft wiederholt, daß es seine Bedeutung zuletzt selbst aufzehrt." Sophienausgabe Band 17 Nr. 4807.

"Der Herr Instrumentmacher Krämer vermiethet dem Herrn Geheimde Rath von Goethe von Weimar zwey Zimmer seines Hauses, in der ersten Etage, nach der Allée zu, nebst einer Kammer hinten hinaus, mit drey Betten und den nöthigen Meubles für Drey Friedrichsd’or auf Vier Wochen, von der Hälfte des Monats Juli ohngefähr, bis in die Hälfte des Augusts, vom Tage der Rückkunft des Herrn Abmiethers von Pyrmont an gerechnet …" Auf der Rückreise von seiner Kur in Pyrmont hielt sich Goethe vom 18. Juli bis zum 14. August in Göttingen auf, um auf der Bibliothek die Lücken im historischen Teil der "Farbenlehre" zu füllen. Beiliegend eine zeitgenöss. Abschrift von Goethes Brief an den Theologen H.E.G. Paulus in Heidelberg vom 7.X.1828 sowie sein Portrait (Photographie von Kügelgens Kreidezeichnung, verso von einem Enkel des Malers beschriftet).

Quittung über eine Zahlung von 50 Talern für das Fürstliche Bauamt "in Abschlag auf die zuerst verfertigte Arbeit zum Sch[l]oßbau". Mitunterzeichnet von Oberhofmeister Wilhelm Freiherr von Wolzogen. – Darunter ein eigenh. Vermerk m. U. des Hofbauinspektors Johann Andreas Kirchner: "9 Paar Türgriffe sind hierauf bis auf das Vergolden in die Möbelkammer abgegeben worden". In seinem Tagebuch vermerkt Goethe unter dem 8.VIII.1800: "Die vergangenen Tage mit dem Schloßbau beschäftigt. Abends Schiller." – Nach dem Brand des Weimarer Schlosses 1774 hatte sich Herzog Carl August 1788 zum Wiederaufbau entschlossen; in der dafür gebildeten Schlossbaukommission hatte Goethe die künstlerisch-stilistische und architektonische Beratung inne.

Goldschmidt, bound in later brown pigskin, gilt, spines titled in gilt and with four raised bands, green silk doublures and endpapers, t.e.g., others uncut, spines and edges rubbed, later board slip-cases (faded, rather tight with one joint split), [Tidcombe DP 10 & 20], 4to, Doves Press, 1906-10. ⁂ "One of the most beautiful books produced at the Doves Press". (Tidcombe). Printed by T.J. Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker from the Weimar editions of 1887 and 1899. The large initials were designed by Edward Johnston and engraved by Eric Gill.
