    Hilde Goldschmidt (1897-1980), born in Leipzig, Expressionist painter and graphic artist, studied there under Hugo Steiner-Prague. In 1919 she met F.K. Gotsch at the Dresden academy, with whom she studied under Kokoschka. Forced to emigrate as a Jew, she sought out Kokoschka in England in 1941. After the war, she worked as a teacher at the Salzburg Summer Academy.     (1897 Leipzig - 1980 Kitzbühel) Nordfriesische Landschaft bei St. Peter-Ording Frühe, expressionistische, in leuchtenden Farben gemalte, wohl vom Deich aus gesehene Landschaft aus dem Jahr 1928, beeinflusst durch den Expressionismus der "Brücke"-Maler, Oskar Kokoschka und die Fauvisten. Die aus einer deutsch-jüdischen Familie stammende Malerin studierte seit 1919 an der Akademie in Dresden, wo sie Friedrich Karl Gotsch kennenlernte, der bis 1933 ihr Lebensgefährte war. Gemeinsam waren sie 1921-1923 Meisterschüler von Oskar Kokoschka an der Akademie. Die Sommermonate verlebten Goldschmidt und Gotsch seit 1921 oft in St. Peter-Ording. 1923-1925 hielten sie sich in den USA auf. 1926/27 studierten Goldschmidt und Gotsch in Paris an der Académie Colarossi. 1936 emigrierte Goldschmidt nach Kitzbühel, 1939 nach England; 1950 kehrte sie nach Kitzbühel zurück, seit Mitte der 1950er Jahre lehrte sie an der von Kokoschka gegründeten Internationalen Sommerakademie für Bildende Kunst in Salzburg. Öl/Lwd.; Verso monogr. u. dat. "HG 1928" sowie auf dem Keilrahmen bez. "W.K. Nr. 17". 62 cm x 76 cm. Rahmen. Oil on canvas. Monogrammed and dated 1928 on the reverse.

    "Venedig" Mischtechnik auf hellbraunem Karton. Um 1960. 36 x 36 cm. Unten links mit Pinsel in Graublau monogrammiert "HG", verso mit Bleistift signiert "Hilde Goldschmidt", betitelt und mit der Ortsangabe "Kitzbühel". Breit und rasant gespachtelte Flächen und markante dunkle Punkte lassen in fein abgestimmter Tonalität von Rot und Violett das Bild eines Kanals in Venedig entstehen; aus dem Nebeneinander der Farbvaleurs entsteht eine Schwingung, ebenso wie aus der Kombination runder und eckiger Formen, horizontaler und vertikaler Elemente. Sie gliedern die Bildfläche und verdichten sich zu einer fein ausbalancierten Komposition.     Pastel on paper Signed with initials, lower right 40 x 50cm (15 3/4 x 19 5/8in.) Provenance: Gifted to Gwyneth Davis (nee Alban) by the artist Thence by descent During the mid 1940s Davis was a member of an artistic community focussed around the Langdales in the Lake District. This group included Kurt Schwitters, his paramour Edith Thomas (Wantee) and Hilde Goldschmidt. Davis was engaged to Bill Pierce son of Harry Pierce on whose land at Cylinders, Shwitters began his Mertz Barn. Schwitters died whilst working on his Mertz Barn and tragically Bill Pierce was killed in a motorcycle accident. Edith Thomas subsequently went to live in London and Hilde left England. On her departure, Hilde left Davis a number of works, two of which are offered in the present and subsequent lot.
