    Gole, Jacob (±1660-1737). "Autumnus". Mezzotint, 25,2x18,4 cm. (platemark), w. a 4-line caption below in Dutch and French, ±1700. - Sl. soiled; paper remnants on verso, from former mount. = Hollstein 317. Part of a rare series apparently representing the 4 Seasons, but which are cartoons on the hostilities between France and the Netherlands, probably during the Nine Year war. In 1688 the French troops crossed the Rhine and devastated much of the Electoral Palatinate (the 'wyn berg' in the rhyme). The Grand Alliance headed by William III of Orange was forged to counter the French expansion, which resulted in the Peace of Rijswijk in 1697. The French text can roughly be translated as: Far from possessing the sweet juice of the grape harvest, I find myself deprived of it by that of the orange. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXXIX.

    JACOB GOLE Collection of 13 mezzotints. Each circa 1690-1710. Each approximately 255x185 mm; 10x7 1/2 inches. Including four subjects from the series of the Five Senses; four subjects from the series of the Seven Virtues; three subjects from the Greek and Roman goddesses series; two subjects from the Seven Continents; and Dame travaillant en Tapisserie. Very good impressions. Gole (1660-1737) worked with the prominent Dutch artist Cornelis Dusart (1660-1704) and became a proficient and early practitioner of the mezzotint printmaking process.
