MANUEL GONZÁLEZ SANTOS (Seville, 1875-1949). “Family scene.” Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner.

      Est: €2,500 - €3,000

MANUEL GONZÁLEZ SANTOS ( Seville, 1875-1949). "Family scene". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 75,5 x 100,5 cm; 91 x 115 cm (frame). The scene represents an everyday moment in the life of a family. Diverse generations of the same one swirl in a room, around an old personage who addresses the spectator with a serious gesture. Both the men and the ladies are dressed in clothes that appear to be of high quality, denoting their good position. The scene has a realistic and emotive tinge, typical of a broad trend in European painting in the second half of the 19th century which remained aloof from Impressionist innovations and was always interested in depicting popular, close-up themes in a style inherited from Realism. Manuel González Santos began his education under the guidance of the painter Francisco Narbona, although he later continued his artistic education at the Santa Isabel de Hungría School of Fine Arts. He is well known for his educational work, as he was appointed teacher to the Infanta Isabella, which won him the favour of the most affluent circles. During his artistic career he took part in numerous national and regional exhibitions of Fine Arts. He was a professor of art and history of the decorative arts in Malaga and Seville and a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel in Hungary.
