Ellen Henne Goodale Oil Painting of a Umiak Crew

An original landscape oil painting on canvas by Alaska artist Ellen Henne Goodale (1915-1991), depicting a grouping of Eskimo figures in brightly colored parkas, along with their sled dogs, tightly gathered in a single-sail umiak, traversing between sharp icebergs. The umiak, a long open boat made most often of seal skin stretched over a wooden or whale bone frame, was traditionally used to transport women, children, and goods to seasonal hunting grounds, and for men when upon a whale hunt. Umiaks rigged for sailing often made use of seal intestines or woven grass mats purposed for large square sails. Signed lower right and housed within a wooden frame, it measures approximately 30" x 36" overall.

After a short stay in Copper Center, they settled near Upper Fire Lake in Chugiak.
