  • Frederick Goodall, RA,  Leading the flock through a desert oasis
    Mar. 12, 2025

Frederick Goodall, RA,  Leading the flock through a desert oasis

    Est: £1,500 - £2,500

Frederick Goodall, RA,  British 1822-1904-  Leading the flock through a desert oasis;  oil on canvas, signed with monogram 'FG' (lower left), 51.2 x 112.5 cm. (unframed).  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Phillips, London, 24 November 1998, lot 26.  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present painting is a characteristic work by Goodall, a hugely successful and celebrated Orientalist painter in his lifetime and subsequently. Goodall made two trips to Egypt, once in 1858 and one in 1870, travelling and camping with members of Bedouin tribes on both occasions, an experience which undoubtedly informed the present scene. The wide, panoramic format of the present work is typical of Goodall's paintings, as is his generous use of warm pinky hues, recalling, for example, a similar work which sold at Gorringes, Lewes, on 10 September 2024, lot 61 (£2,600 hammer), or another which sold at Bonhams, London, on 25 October 2023, lot 42 (£3,200).

Frederick Goodall, RA (1822-1904) Queen Henrietta Maria and her children on the river signed 'F. Goodall' (lower left) oil on panel 33.5 x 42cm Provenance: Vicars Brothers Ltd, London; Haynes Fine Art, from whom acquired by the present owner in the 1990s The present subject is a reduced version of some of the principal figures but excluding King Charles, from Goodall's large-scale painting, The Happier Days of Charles I, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1853 and which is now at the Bury Art Gallery. Goodall painted at least two other known oil versions of this composition - the present painting and one, considerably larger, 58.5 x 68.5cm, that was dated to 1852 and sold at Christie's New York on 1st November 2012 for 62,500 USD (incl. premium). Another version, but in watercolour, which is nearly identical in size to the present oil, 32.5 x 41.5cm, was lot 294 in a Dorotheum sale on 27th March 2018. 'In 1852 Goodall spent several months of the summer in a houseboat on the Thames making studies for The Happier Days of Charles I . . . the houseboat was brought down from Oxford to where he wanted to work - between Streatley and the village of Stoke - by a painter friend, Samuel Evans, the son of William Evans, the drawing master at Eton . . . the setting taken care of, Goodall then obtained permission from the Queen to make studies of the Van Dyck painting of Charles, Henrietta Maria and the children in Windsor Castle where he spent some weeks' (see N G Slarke, Frederick Goodall, R.A., 1981, p. 23).
