FERDINAND LOUIS GOTTLOB (1873-1935) 2E EXPOSITION DES PEINTRES LITHOGRAPHES. 1898. 46 1/2x29 1/2 inches, 118x75 cm. Lemercier, Paris. Condition B+: restoration along repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image. Framed. Gottlob was both a painter and an illustrator, which was common for many young artists of the period as, for a while, the distinction between the fine arts and applied arts virtually disappeared. The blurring of this distinction led to exhibitions like Les Peintres Lithographes, for which Gottlob (who was not a prolific poster artist) designed this, their second exhibition poster. Est: $700 - $1,000

FERDINAND LOUIS GOTTLOB (1873-1935) LE FROU FROU / LEURS PORTRAITS. Gouache maquette. 16 1/2x12 1/2 inches, 42x31 3/4 cm. Condition B+: loss in upper left corner; small repaired tears, creases and abrasions at edges; minor foxing and staining in background; pencil, ink and gouache on paper; hinged to mat at top edge. Matted. Le Frou Frou, subtitled as a "Chronicle of elegant life, theatrical news, echoes of the world," was a humor magazine launched in 1900, in print until 1923. From its inception, its aim was to titillate, thus it included many renderings of dancing women with frilly skirts in playful and risqué poses. This original artwork by Gottlob (one of the biggest contributers of illustrations to the magazine) is no different, depicting a young woman perched on a turn-of-the-century camera, seemingly lost in thought - and having lost track of her sleeve.

Iskin speaks of the iconography of the female print connoisseur seen in posters as a reflection of the growing middle class of the 1890s. "Typically, this new figure was a fashionable woman directing a sustained gaze at an original print she has selected from a portfolio... Gottlob's poster depicts a woman wearing a decorated hat, indicating that she is seated in the public space of a gallery rather than in her home. Her aesthetic gaze is focused on a single black-and-white print... The woman is holding up the print for inspection, having presumably selected it from the portfolio. The bright yellow background highlights the print and turns her upper body into a well-defined silhouette while functioning as a glowing backdrop for the dark-colored lettering announcing the exhibition" (Iskin, p. 106-107). This original stone lithograph is apart of the Les Maîtres de l'Affiche prints now a sought after item. Of the 97 artists represented in the 256 stone lithographs of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, some were preeminent painters and printmakers at various stages of their career. Others were famous illustrators and cartoonists of the period, still well known to art collectors and bibliophiles. Preserving a wide-ranging selection of outstanding posters from the turn of the 19th century, Les Maîtres de l'Affiche's prints, which are now over 110 years old, are considered one of the most prestigious and influential art publications in history.

Lemercier, Paris "Perhaps it is the handling of silhouettes that gives this poster of a woman print fancier its appeal. The scene is a gallery interior. Gottlob has placed the woman in front of a large window, and through dramatic backlighting has emphasised the dark forms. The crisp outlines of the plumed hat, the woman's delicate features, and the print she examines dominate the composition, and the stylized lettering announcing the exhibition enliven the surface... the examples of the surviving originals of the poster were [very rare], which also exists in reduced versions made for the fifth album of Les Maitres de l'Affiche in 1900, the year after it was designed. The inclusion of it in that series was a boon for Gottlob, ensuring attention he has yet to receive for his paintings of Parisian Boulevards" (Wolfe, 44).
