Francisco de Goya Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Etcher, Lithographer, b. 1746 - d. 1828

Born in Spain in 1746, Francisco Goya was a world-respected artist who worked in a bold and romantic rococo style. Goya's etchings and paintings include many subversive or whimsical elements, and have often been taken as political statements. Goya served for years as Painter to the King and was Director of Painting at the Royal Academy of San Fernando, where he once studied. He is one of the last Old Masters, whose popularity extended far beyond his public civic life. Francisco Goya's paintings have influenced the work of many great painters.

While committing to canvas an astonishing amount of officially-commissioned work, Goya also created custom works of portraiture and small paintings of grotesque nature for his lesser-known but wealthy clientele. Goya's etchings and prints for sale, such as the Disasters of War series, are realistically and dramatically composed. Find historical etchings at Invaluable, including works from popular Spanish artists.

Francisco de Goya - La Tauromaquia (III/VII) - Dreadful events in the ring in Madrid

                  Est: €800 - €1,600

Unfortunate Events in the Front Seats of the Ring of Madrid, and the Death of the Mayor of Torrejón. It showsan elevated view over stand at edge of arena, with a bull goring a figure with others either fleeing or injured below. Unfortunate Events... is number 21 in a series of 35 etchings making up his Tauromaquia ("Art of Bullfighting") series, which he produced between 1815 and 1816.[ The plate has been described by Robert Hughes as among the greatest of Goya's graphic output. The etching details an event from 15 June 1801 when a bull broke through barriers at a bullfight in Madrid, killing two people (including the mayor of Torrejón de Ardoz) and injuring a number of other spectators. The lifeless body of the mayor is seen impaled and hanging from the triumphant-looking animal's horns, while the second dead man is shown beneath the barrier in the middle-ground, mourned by a woman in white. This is from an early edition, it is a third edition on seven published by E. Loizelet in 1876, with the paper size( 32,30 x 48,00 cm) and arches watermark as described for that edition.

Francisco de Goya, Fuendetodos 1746 - 1828 Bordeaux, attributed, Portrait of a boy

                  Est: €1,200 - €1,800

Francisco de Goya Fuendetodos 1746 - 1828 Bordeaux, attributed Portrait of a boy Oil on canvas, relined 43 x 34 cm, framed 53 x 45 cm This captivating portrait of a pale boy shows him smiling slightly with curly hair, dressed in an elegant black jacket over a white shirt. The gray background draws the eye to the boy's expressive face, which smiles at the viewer with a mischievous look. This direct and playful expression lends the work a lively personality and immerses the viewer in the world of the sitter. Francisco de Goya, an outstanding representative of 18th and 19th century Spanish painting, is often regarded as a pioneer of modern art. His works range from majestic portraits of the Spanish royal family to sombre, emotional compositions depicting the horrors of war and human nature. Goya was known for his ability to capture the emotions and character traits of his models, which is impressively demonstrated in this portrait of the boy. The attributed work is in the context of Goya's later creative period, in which he increasingly experimented with different styles. His interest in depicting children's faces and figures reflects not only the social changes of his time, but also his personal relationship to themes such as innocence and vulnerability. These portraits, often characterized by a palpable intimacy, invite the viewer to explore the complex psychology of the sitters. Overall, this portrait conveys a combination of playfulness and depth characteristic of Goya's art, while offering insights into the cultural and artistic currents of his time.

Circle of FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (Fuendetodos, Zaragoza, 1746 - Bordeaux, France, 1828). "Portrait of a bullfighter. Oil on canvas. Measurements: 75 x 54 cm; 68 x 88 cm (frame). Male portrait that follows the classic models of the genre with the protagonist portrayed of bust, slightly turned in three fours to provide some depth to the scene and the face directed towards the viewer. The neutral background of leaden tonality arranges all the interest of the spectator in the figure of the portrayed that through his intense look and his carefree pose offers a proud vision. Both the hairstyle and the attire indicate that this is a portrait of an 18th century bullfighter. In terms of aesthetics, it is worth noting the stylistic closeness of the painting to the work of Goya, who addressed the theme of bullfighting on several occasions both in his cartoons ("La novillada") with his famous series of engravings "La Tauromaquia", and through several portraits of José Romero, highlighting the work in which the bullfighter is dressed in the costume given to him by the Duchess of Alba, with a capote from Jerez and a handkerchief from Ronda around his neck. This portrait is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (United States). One of the most outstanding painters in the history of universal art, Francisco de Goya received his first drawing and painting lessons from José Luzán Martínez, who taught at his home and also at the Academy of Drawing founded in Zaragoza in 1754. After three years of studies with this teacher, Goya applied for a pension from the Royal Academy of San Fernando in 1763, at the age of seventeen. It seems that by then he was already a student of Francisco Bayeu, who had returned from court. However, Goya did not manage to enter the Academy, nor when he tried again in 1766. Around 1770 he undertook a trip to Italy to broaden his training and improve his possibilities. There he would leave evidence of his early taste for the grotesque and the satirical. After a long career, Goya was replaced as Pintor de Cámara by Vicente López, and he entered a period of isolation, bitterness and illness that led him to seclude himself in the Quinta del Sordo, on the outskirts of Madrid, where he produced his supreme work: the Pinturas Negras (Black Paintings). Fed up with the absolutism imposed by Ferdinand VII in Spain, Goya finally left for France in 1824, where he met with exiled liberal friends. There he spent his last years and produced his final work, "The Milkmaid of Bordeaux", in which he anticipated impressionism. Today his work is part of the most important art galleries in the world, from the Prado Museum to the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Louvre in Paris or the National Gallery in London.
