Artist: FERDINAND LUDWIG GRAF (1868-1932) Size: 34 5/8 x 50 in./95.5 x 127 cm J. Weiner, Wien The early portion of the Nineteenth Century was an historically rough patch for Austrians. With the collapse of the Austrian Empire, a reorganization of the government became inevitable, and in 1867 a compromise with Hungarian moderate nationalists established a dual state: the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. But the realm, a land of diverse peoples ruled by a German-Magyar minority, increasingly became an anachronism in a nationalistic age. As a response to ever-growing ethnic conflicts, a celebration of unity was declared in order to at least ease these increasing nationalistic tensions. Inspired by Impressionism and the vivid palette of Paul Cézanne, Graf gives us one an exceptional design for this annual festival.
