    Est: £10,000 - £20,000

John D. (Ivan Dabrowsky) Graham (1881-1961). Ukraine/Russia/USA/Unired Kingdom Untitled, 1932. Oil on canvas, size 48 x 61 cm (19 x 24 inches). Frame dimensions 72 x 81 cm (28 1/3 x 32 inches). Signed and dated upper right. John D. Graham was a figure of immense influence in the early years of American modernism, both as an artist and as a connoisseur. He is credited as a major influence in the formation of Abstract Expressionism and in his work alternated between Abstraction and Realism,Graham was born in Kiev on January 8, 1881 (or 1886 or 1887) with the name of Ivan Gratianovich Dombrovski. He is thought to have arrived in New York City in about 1920. Once in New York, he hid himself behind a curtain of fact and myth. In 1923 Graham was enrolled at the Art Students League, working briefly as an assistant to John Sloan. There is little concrete information that Graham had any previous art experience. In 1925 he participated in the ‘Tenth Whitney Annual Exhibition’. That year he moved to Baltimore with the painter Elinor Gibson, the first of his two American wives. In Baltimore, he became associated with the renowned collector Duncan Phillips, who gave Graham his first one-person museum exhibition in 1929. Phillips described Graham's bearing, with his air of Russian émigré officer of noble descent, his classical education and commitment to art, as an ‘ambition for martyrdom’, one which gave him an aura of Old World mystery and romance. He became an American citizen in 1927, although he lived and worked in both New York and Paris, becoming a catalyst in the transmittal of European modernism to America. He counted among his friends such names as Stuart Davis, Dorothy Dehner, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, David Smith, Katherine Dreier, Willem de Kooning, and, in later years, Jackson Pollock. Late in his life he was financially secure, but isolated from the art world because of his highly personal style. He spent many hours doing meditation and yoga, and corresponding with women friends, who included Ultra Violet, Andy Warhol's movie star, as well as well as the artist Francoise Gilot, friend of Pablo Picasso. His final works were similar to those of the Renaissance Old Masters. His art can be seen in several public collections at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh and The Phillips Collection of Washington, D.C. Graham died in 1961 in London, England.

"Beauty cannot be foreseen. Beauty is the beautiful expanded to the verge of ugliness." (J. Graham, System and Dialectics of Art, New York, 1937, p. 133) John D. Graham was a figure of immense influence in the early years of American Modernism, both as an artist and as a connoisseur. Though Graham himself was not an abstract painter, he certainly understood the significance of gesture and was a precursor to action painters of the future. Indeed, Graham is widely credited as a major influencer in the formation of Abstract Expressionism. An eccentric of aristocratic bearing, John Graham cloaked many of the details of his early life in a colorful mythology of his own creation. There is considerable contradictory information surrounding the artist's early years, but we know that he was born Ivan Dombrovski in Kiev. He served as a cavalry officer in the Czar's army during World War I, escaped to Poland, and later to France, when the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917. In 1920, Graham arrived in New York and began his formal career as an artist. In New York, Graham soon befriended Alexander Calder, Barnett Newman, and Adolph Gottlieb at the Art Students League. Together, with Arshile Gorky and Willem de Kooning, they constituted the most influential artists of the New York School. By 1942, Graham organized the "Exhibition of French and American Painters" at the McMillen Gallery, which showed, for the first time, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Henri Matisse alongside such unknowns as Jackson Pollock and de Kooning. It was also at this time that Graham, remaining a realist among the abstractionists, began painting neo-classical figurative works, which eventually evolved into his signature series. As his early career unfolded throughout the 1920s, Graham explored a variety of styles. His work in this decade ranges from energetic, expressive Post-Impressionist still lifes to restrained, monochromatic studies inspired by Picasso. Among his variations on the same theme, Woman at the Window is one of the earliest known examples from the artist's renowned and arguably most important series that he revisited throughout his life. In the present work, Woman at the Window, Graham employs a background of rich black tones to frame a relaxed and composed nude woman as she sits in stark contrast to her surroundings. There is a sense of boldness and frankness in her nakedness. The sitter's flat, unmodulated décolletage, arms, and face appear almost unfinished. Whether intentional or not, this effect serves to press the figure against the background, vivifying the interplay of dimensional space. These "unfinished" areas dually function to show his allegiance to drawing, whereby he probes the limits of form, its edge, where one color meets another. Graham maintained his ties to Europe with frequent travel to Paris. By the 1930s, he had gained notoriety in New York art circles as an emissary of European Modernism, particularly Surrealism. At the same time, exhibitions of his work at t

    Sep. 21, 2021

JOHN GRAHAM (1886-1961) Sketchbook with approximately 40 drawings.

    Est: $5,000 - $8,000

JOHN GRAHAM (1886-1961) Sketchbook with approximately 40 drawings. Spiral-bound sketchbook with approximately 40 pencil, crayon or pen and ink drawings. 270x210 mm; 10 1/2x8 1/4 inches. Signed, dated "1960" and inscribed in ink on the front cover. With a pen and ink and crayon portrait of the artist David Burliuk on the front cover and a color crayon portrait of the artist Paul Manship on the rear cover. Circa 1930s-40s. The drawings in this sketchbook appear to date from the 1930s, when Graham was making work in the abstract, post-Cubist style of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973, see lot 176 and lot 177), to the 1940s, when his abstract style (there are several pencil drawings in the sketchbook of loosely rendered landscapes over which the artist has scrawled abstract color crayon lines) became a strong influence on Abstract Expressionist artists who he counted among his friends and acquaintances, such as Willem de Kooning (1904-1997), Jackson Pollock (1912-1956), Lee Krasner (1908-1984), Mark Rothko (1903-1970) and David Smith (1906-1965, see lot 187), in addition to stylized portraits of artists and other figures he sketched in New York and Paris during the 1930s-40s, including the portraits of David Burliuk (1882-1967) and Paul Manship (1885-1966, see lot 42) on the covers.

  • JOHN GRAHAM (1886-1961) Two color pencil portrait drawings.
    Sep. 21, 2021

JOHN GRAHAM (1886-1961) Two color pencil portrait drawings.

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

JOHN GRAHAM (1886-1961) Two color pencil portrait drawings. Adolf Basler * Judge Wells, with crosshatching in pen and ink, left recto. Titled in pencil, upper left recto. Both on beige sketch paper. Both 270x210 mm; 10 5/8x8 1/4 inches. Both circa 1934-35. Adolphe Basler (1876-1951) was a Paris-based critic and art dealer who discovered and promoted the work of emerging artists in the vibrant and cosmopolitan artistic scene of Montparnasse in the 1910s and 1920s. Graham's significant, influential career of four decades was marked by reinvention and a commitment to his vision of the endless possibilities of American Art. Born Ivan Dabrowsky in Kiev, Graham was a law student and a czarist soldier in the 1917 revolution. After imprisonment and the downfall of Nicholas II, Graham left Russia and arrived in the United States in 1920. Though it is unclear if he showed artistic inclination in Russia, Graham recreated himself as an art student in New York. He attended the Art Students League from 1922 to 1924, where he studied under John Sloan (1871-1951). In a meteoric rise to recognition, Graham's first solo museum exhibition was organized by Duncan Philips in 1929. Like many early career artists, Graham traveled to Paris (his work would later be exhibited at Galerie Zabriskie, Paris) and he came under the influence of the Surrealists and their psychoanalytical approach, however he remained dedicated to his mission of creating a new American Art. Along with Stuart Davis (1892-1964) and Arshile Gorky (1904-1948), Graham would provide a foundation for American Modernism and would be sought out by a new generation of the New York School (his watershed 1937 treatise, System and Dialectics of Art had advanced the Abstract Expressionist movement). During the 1940s, Graham departed from his post-Cubist style, and adopted a new loosened, abstract style. At this time, he served as a mentor to younger artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Arshile Gorky, whose works would shape the Abstract Expressionist movement. Graham was also considered influential to Lee Krasner, David Smith, Dorothy Dehner, and Mark Rothko. In his mature career, he found inspiration in Old Master works and he approached his canvases with a measure of dignity and mysticism. His portraits are powerful, standing out boldly from their flattened back drops. Simultaneously, Graham conveyed a delicate luminosity and vulnerability; his courtesans' askew eyes act to ground the figure in a plane between fantasy and reality. This merging of worlds characterizes not only Graham's work but also his storied, monumental life.
