Laura Graham, American, 1912-1938, oil on canvas

      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Laura Margaret Graham, American, 1912-1938. New York, Pennsylvania. Portrait and landscape painting. “Sunday Afternoon” is titled, signed, and lists exhibitions, all engraved on a metal plaque attached to the front of the frame. Attached to the back are two labels from Graham mailing the work, one with the sending address to the American Artists Professional League, and a gallery label. “Sunday Afternoon” (after Charles Courtney Curran (1861–1942), “Dans le Jardin du Luxembourg,” 1889) Depicts the 1872 bronze statue on a stone base at the Luxembourg Gardens, created by Auguste Nicholas Caïn called “Le Lion de Nubie et sa Proie,” which translates in English to “The Lion of Nubia and its Prey.” The animal was based upon the Nubian lion, the largest lion in the world. The bronze lion stands valiantly over his ostrich prey. Although the lion may seem to steal the show, the woman in a blue dress is the focal point of the composition. She sits on a chair as she disperses lunch to four small birds. The painting was created after Charles Courtney Curran’s (1861–1942), “Dans le Jardin du Luxembourg” of 1889, perhaps 41-43 years later. In the winter of 1932 the painting was exhibited at the National Academy of Design and in 1934 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts annual exhibition, just four years before the artist died at the young age of twenty-six.
