    Herbert Gentry 1919-2003 untitled, composition with figures 1970-1980 gouache on paper 31-1/2 x 22-4/5 inches unsigned Gentry's work was influenced by the Dutch group of artists, CoBrA, founded in 1949. The group included Ernest Mancoba, a Black South African painter, and well-known painters, Karel Appel and Pierre Alechinsky. Their style was intentionally primitive and folkloric, and the child-like figures associated with the group were simultaneously humorous and happy and also frightening, mirroring the terrors of the war which had recently ended.

High stretched egg shape w. short neck. Body incised w. irregular, vertical line decoration, in some places diagonal cut marks. Partly dam. and rest., wall with light-coloured stains. Literature: Deutsche Keramik des 20. Jahrhunderts, Vol. 1, Ekkart Klinge, Düsseldorf 1975, illus. p. 16 (for comparison). Provenance: Private collection Hessen.     Robert McDonald Graham, Jr. (Missouri, 1919-2003) Self Portrait, Age 20, 1941 1993 The luminous self portrait in egg tempera with oil glazes on a wood panel is signed, titled and dated verso. This painting was held in the artist's personal collection up until the time of his death. The work was then sold from his estate and has been in a private collection since that time. Board measures 18 x 15 with a framed size of 25.5 x 22.5 inches.
