    Oil bozzetto, probably for a ceiling or altarpiece. The saint is kneeling in adoration on a cloud at the top right, wearing a white alba and a choir robe. Opposite him, angels hover in front of a centre of light. Other figures on banks of clouds, including a putto holding a crozier, the saint's attribute. Gran, the son of a court cook and patronised by the House of Schwarzenberg, studied under Sebastiano Ricci in Venice and Francesco Solimena in Naples. In 1727 he became court painter in Vienna. His style shows him to be a representative of the classical direction of Austrian Baroque in accordance with the Viennese imperial style. This also explains the elegant restraint in the use of colour, especially in his large commissioned works, which include large ceiling paintings in the Vienna Court Library, the Schwarzenberg Garden Palace, Klosterneuburg Abbey, Fridau Palace and many others.     APOTHEOSE EINES HEILIGEN BISCHOFS Öl auf Leinwand. 61 x 51 cm. Ölbozzetto, wohl für ein Decken- oder Altargemälde. Der Heilige kniet rechts oben in Anbetung auf einer Wolke, in weißer Alba, darüber ein Chormantel. Ihm gegenüber schwebende Engel vor einem Lichtzentrum. Weitere Gestalten auf Wolkenbänken, dabei ein Putto, der einen Bischofskrummstab, Attribut des Heiligen hält. Mangels weiterer attributiver Hinweise konnte die Darstellung bislang noch nicht gedeutet werden. Gran, Sohn eines Hofkochs, gefördert durch das Haus Schwarzenberg, studierte bei Sebastiano Ricci in Venedig, sowie bei Francesco Solimena in Neapel. 1727 wurde er in Wien Hofmaler. Sein Stil zeigt ihn gemäß des Wiener Reichsstils als Vertreter der klassischen Richtung des österreichischen Barock. Dies erklärt auch die elegante Zurückhaltung in der Farbigkeit vor allem seiner großen Auftragswerke, zu denen große Deckenbilder etwa in der Hofbibliothek Wien, im Gartenpalais Schwarzenberg, im Stift Klosterneuburg, im Schloss Fridau – und vielen weiteren zählen. Bei vorliegendem Werk handelt es sich um ein Studienblatt aus Grans früher Schaffensphase. Es entstand vermutlich auf seiner Italienreise.     Saint Nicolas of Bari rescuing Adeodatus; and Saint Benedict giving his Rule oil on canvas, painted arch tops 30 x 151/2 in. (76.2 x 39.3cm.) a pair (2) PROVENANCE Herther Neuffer, Vienna. Gritine Mautner Markhof, Vienna. LITERATURE E. Knab, Daniel Gran, Vienna/Munich, 1977, pp. 176-7, nos. O27 and O30, figs. 97 and 99. NOTES The present pictures are modelli for Daniel Gran's altarpieces painted for Vienna's Schwarzspanierkirche in 1736 and transferred to the Minorite Church, Vienna, in 1786 where they have remained ever since. Knab ( loc. cit. ) published both works as the primary sketches for the project, listing five versions of the Saint Nicolas sketch, by the workshop and later followers (nos. 027A-E), and one other autograph modello for the Saint Benedict which shows notable differences in the upper parts of the composition (no. O29). As the author points out, the style of both pictures was inspired by the work of Luca Giordano and Francesco Solimena. The subjects are relatively unusual. The first is taken from the Golden Legend and tells how Saint Nicolas appeared in a cloud of glory and bore away the child Adeodatus from the table of the Agarane king and took him back to his parents. The second subject shows Saint Benedict giving his rule which begins with the words on the open book 'Ausculta o fili praecepta magistri' ('Harken my son to the precepts of the master'). The two young men kneeling before him may allude specifically to the reception of Maurus and Placidus into the order. The figure overhead seems to represent the Catholic faith.
