Dempsey, History in Their Blood, Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver/Toronto, 1982, page 16.Note:De Grandmaison did not often title his portraits of women and children, preferring to label them generically as “Squaw” or “Papoose.” Belatedly, he realized the historical significance of recording the names of all his subjects, as he did for the Indian Chiefs he drew. Nonetheless, his portraits of children such as this lot were far from being stock types and were said to be so faithful to their subjects that, according to Dempsey, a relative might exclaim: “Ki-ai-yowww” or “it’s just like him (or her).”

This work was included in the exhibition Landscapes and Views of Indian Life which opened at the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery January 19, 1989 and subsequently at the Masters Gallery in Calgary AB on March 18, 1989. Jeffrey J. Spalding wrote ?Many of these works were created on the spot at some favoured special place while the artist awaited the arrival of a sitter for a portrait session. Unassuming and direct, they reveal another side to the personality of the artist sometimes concealed by the official face of the public portrait.' Est: $15,000 - $20,000

Artist : NICHOLAS DE GRANDMAISON ~ [1892-1978] Canadian Title : Untitled - Seated Indian in Teepee Media : pastel on paper 33.25 x 25.5 in. / 84 x 65 cm. Dated: 1930 pre Notes: signed lower left; several repairs noted; framed Reference: : The same subject was also painted by the artist in a smaller portrait illustrated on page 31 of Drawn From the Past , the newly released publication on the artist. The work illustrated is in the University of Lethbridge Art Collection. During the period that the artist first came into contact with the Cree Indians on his initial visits to northern Manitoba in 1927, and later to The Pas in 1930, he painted a number of works with multiple subjects in interior settings. He subsequently moved westward to the Cree Reserve at Fort Qu'Appelle, and then to Alberta to the Blackfoot Reserve east of Calgary, and further south to Glenwood east of the Blood Reserve. Some of the smaller works of interior views from this period were included in the University of Lethbridge and Master Gallery Exhibition in 1989. As he continued to develop his technique in both oil and pastel, he favoured rendering just the face of the subject with attention to detail around the head, neck and shoulders. This is a very rare example of a subject in a full interior view and was not repeated. Provenance: ex-collection J.V. Dedora, B.C. ESTIMATE:
