    GEORGE WASHINGTON SIGNED LAND GRANT

    Est: $8,000 - $10,000

    GEORGE WASHINGTON SIGNED LAND GRANT, on vellum, dated 1796, to Major General Horatio Gates and assignee James Murray for 2,000 acres within the Virginia Military District in what would become Ohio. Signed in brown ink "G. Washington" and signed by Secretary of State "Timothy Pickering." 14" x 12.5" (opening), 22.75" x 20.75" (wood frame). Major General Horatio Gates served in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment for seven years and was awarded the land grant for his service. Gates was born in England in 1727 and served in the British Army for 25 years, including the French and Indian War (1754-1763) in Pennsylvania and New York. In 1773 Gates purchased a plantation and enslaved people in Virginia and later returned to military service during and after the American Revolutionary War and held various positions. Gates served in the New York State Legislature in 1800 and died in 1806.
