After Eugene Grasset, Swiss, French, 1841 to 1917, lithographic advertising poster. When this poster by Eugene Grasset was exhibited at the Salon des Cent in Paris it was hailed as the artists masterpiece. It was commissioned to advertise a series of books on the Romantic era published by Ed. Monnier and Cie. Grasset depicts a woman attired in 1830s clothing reading from a large volume with the cathedral of Notre Dame in the background. To add to the Gothic theme, he included a skull at her feet. Framed. Eugene Samuel Grasset was a Swiss decorative artist who worked in Paris, France in a variety of creative design fields during the Belle Epoque. He is considered a pioneer in Art Nouveau design. This charming, allegorical image depicts "the poster" threatening the "cabinet print" (seen carrying a portfolio of prints) with her bill poster brush. It is reminiscent of Pierre Bonnard's poster for L'Estampe et l'Affiche delivering the same message, that the "artistic poster" was the youthful, buoyant force that would rejuvenate the art market, which had relied too long on "classic" prints. And, indeed, between 1895 and 1900, the poster was certainly ascendant, taking such a hold on the public that the term "affichomanie" (poster mania) was coined. Rare. Not in Arwas, not in Murray-Robertson.

This image is highly regarded and the image itself is an homage to Gothic romance, featuring a young woman, clad in 1830s attire, sitting on a pile of old books, a skull at her feet, absorbed in her reading. In the background, the gothic façade of Notre Dame (perhaps a tribute to Victor Hugo) glows in the twilight. "This gentle and delightful work is singled out by Maindron for special praise, as one of the four best posters of the period . . . [and] in the exhibition at the Salon des Cent, it was generally considered to be Grasset's masterpiece" (Abdy p. 124). Eugène Grasset Swiss/French, (1845-1917) Anxiety (Inquiétude), 1897 color lithograph Published in Art et Décoration. Biography from the Archives of askART: One of the precursors of the Art Nouveau style, Eugène Samuel Grasset was trained as an architect in his native Switzerland and travelled to Egypt before eventually settling in Paris in 1871. He was mainly active as a specialist designer in the applied and decorative arts, in particular producing designs for jewellery, furniture and stained glass. He made a close study of Gothic* architecture and stained glass windows, and became friendly with Eugène Viollet-le Duc, the architect responsible for the restoration of Notre-Dame. These archeological studies allowed him to create accurate depictions of medieval towns, castles, weapons and objects for the elaborate and beautiful illustrations that he produced between 1881 and 1883 for a lavish edition of the Carolingian epic Histoire des Quatre Fils Aymon. Published in 1883, the book is today recognized as an important forerunner of Art Nouveau* book design in France. Grasset exhibited watercolours at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and also showed a painting at the inaugural Salon de la Rose + Croix in 1892, a year after he took French nationality. He also exhibited at Le Libre Esthétique in Brussels and with the Vienna Secession. It was not until 1894, when he was already in his early fifties, that Grasset had his first and only one-man exhibition in his lifetime; a large retrospective of his work at the Salon des Cent, a new gallery on the premises of the magazine La Plume. The exhibition included drawings and watercolours, numerous designs for furniture, stained glass, metalwork, fabric and jewellery, as well as theatrical and advertising posters, book and magazine covers, illustrations and other work as a graphic designer. Inspired by Japanese art (which he had noted at the Exposition Universelle* of 1878) as well as medieval art, Grasset published two important books on ornamental design; La plante et ses applications ornamentales, which appeared in 1898-1899, and Méthode de composition ornamental, published in 1905. He also contributed articles and reviews to the journals Revue des Arts Décoratifs and Art et Décoration, and between 1881 and his death in 1917 served as the highly influential Professor of Decorative Arts at the Ecole Normale d'Enseignement du Dessin. Large groups of drawings, designs, studies and sketches by Grasset are today in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Le visuel a été utilisé pour une affiche du journal « The century ». Cette lithographie était probablement une prime du journal offerte à certains abonnés. On y voit Napoléon sur son cheval dirigeant ses troupes devant les grandes pyramides. Si l'homme est largement connu, on oublie souvent qu'il a aussi été auteur. "Les mois" from 1896 complete with its 12 woodcuts on China paper, the rarest and most luxurious of the 32 x 25 cm papers, printed by G. de Malherbe in Paris. The result is one of the most charming artifacts of the entire Belle Époque: a portfolio of 12 romantic Art Nouveau images of beautiful gardeners, gardening beautifully, in whatever weather—from the frozen-over fountains of January to the Van Gogh irises of May, the sunflowers of August, and beyond. It's undoubtedly Grasset's most famous work, reproduced (under the title "The Months") and fashioned into all manner of objects, from coasters and trivets to scarves.
