(all published), illustrations, library bookplate to inner wrapper no.1, the odd very small library stamp on plates verso, original wrappers or boards, no.1 with light chipping to spine ends but excellent overall, no.2 & 3 spine worn with some loss, Martin Secker & Cecil Palmer, large 4to, 1919-23; and 3 duplicates of no.2 (6) ⁂ A scarce literary periodical, edited by the twenty-three-year old Robert Graves. Originally the brainchild of Graves’s father-in-law, William Nicholson, it was agreed that Graves would take on the role of literary editor, while Nicholson would select the illustrators and, more importantly, fund the publication. At this early stage of his career, Graves’s literary preferences were strongly influenced by his connection to the Georgian poetic movement, which shaped his selection of contributors. He chose to exclude the more radical literary voices of the time (Eliot and Pound - avid critics of the Georgian conservative ventures), and instead favoured the well-established writers such as Thomas Hardy, J. C. Squire, John Galsworthy, and Walter De la Mare - though to the magazine's peril. The first issue was released in May 1919, and it continued only for one more number. It was briefly revived as The Winter Owl for a single edition in November 1923.

Abbott, from Robert Graves, Bryn-y-pin, 1918" to inside front cover, a spotting to edges, original plain red wrappers, light sunning to spine, light rubbing and creasing to extremities, 8vo, Chiswick Press, [1916]. ⁂ Graves' second published collection of poetry, written whilst he was convalescing after being hit by a German shell with a presentation inscription to a fellow poet. H. H. Abbott (1891-1976) was an Edwardian poet whose work was very much in the style of his Georgian poet contemporaries. He was featured in several collections alongside Graves.

Graves (Robert, poet and novelist, 1895-1985) Autograph Letter signed "RG", ¼p., sm. 4to, Deyá, 13th April 1970, written as a reply on a TLs from Austin Storrey to Graves and sending him a copy of his poems, Island in the Sun, and Graves thanking him for the poems, referring to one, "And isn't the champagne Ghastly" and replying about package tourists to Majorca, "By the way, though there are now 4 million air-tourists a year here, my family & I were the first ?airliners to land by plane (May 1946, air-taxi... from the British Navy!", and commenting on his daughter Lucia Graves, "My daughter got a First at Oxford, St Anne's, then married a Spanish drummer & has passed a local exam actually allowing her to write songs for popular performance! Hope your daughters have the same luck", folds; and a copy of Island in the Sun, 1973, v.s., v.d. (2). ⁂ Graves gives no indication of his opinion of Storrey's poems.
