She studied art with Lila Hetzel at at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh and with Arthur Dow at Columbia University in New York.Active in New York City, she exhibited with the National Academy of Design in 26 annual exhibitions between 1921 and 1949. She was at teacher in 1940 at the Emma Willard School and her work was represented in New York City by Grand Central Art Galleries.

    Mary Gray (American, 1891-1964), In the Window oil on canvas, signed at lower left, presented in the original carved and gilt frame, inscribed on the verso. Stretcher size 30 1/4 x 40 1/4 in.; Frame dimensions 35 x 44 1/2 in. Mary Gray was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She studied with Lila Hetzel at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. She continued her studies in New York under Cecilia Beaux, Arthur Dow, William Merritt Chase and Felice W. Howell. Mary Gray is best known for her still life paintings and interior scenes. She exhibited frequently at the Grand Central Art Galleries and the National Academy of Design in New York, as well as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. She taught art for several years at the Emma Willard School in New York. In 1930 she married and moved to Pine Orchard, Connecticut with her husband.
