Henri Greber réalisa la présente sculpture a partir d’une série de quatre photographies en pied de Martin Frémiet, prises de face, profil et dos, qui reprennent en tous points la sculpture finale. Cet échange entre photographie et sculpture est novateur pour l’époque, et Greber reprit ce principe au moins une autre fois avec le portrait du peintre Gérôme.

Il est l'élève d'Antonin Mercié à l'École des Beaux-Arts à Paris. Fils de Johan-Peter Gréber et frère de Paul et Charles Gréber, il est le père de l'architecte Jacques Gréber. Une rue portant son nom se trouve à Beauvais.

signed: H. GREBÉR, white marble CATALOGUE NOTE The son of an ornemaniste, Gréber studied under Fremiet and Mercié and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français. One of his principal works was a fountain of Narcisse for the Luxembourg (destroyed 1941) and another opposite the town hall in Beauvais.
