Jonathan Green Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1955 -

Artist Jonathan Green is a Southern painter of abstract human figures engaged in everyday life. He is part of the Gullah culture along the South Carolina coast, and his art reflects his roots. He is also a printmaker who produces faithful lithographs of his works. Jonathan Green prints are highly prized by collectors for their autobiographical, documentary depiction of Gullah life.

Jonathan Green paintings of baptisms, harvest work, and celebrations consist of bold, colorful oils on canvas, even more amplified than the actual vibrancy of the people and land themselves. His subjects take on a cubist delineation, part Picasso, and part Rivera, and are the centerpieces of his works.

Artist Jonathan Green's artwork hangs in prestigious museums, including the Naples Museum of Art in Florida and the Afro-American Museum of Philadelphia. Other vibrant figural paintings for sale are on offer online at Invaluable.

Jonathan Green (American, b. 1955) First Sunday, 1995 Lithograph in colors on Arches paper 19 x 18-1/2 inches (48.3 x 47.0 cm) (sheet) Ed. 118/250 Signed and numbered in pencil along lower edge Published by Mojo Portfolio, New York Black Art of a Distinguished Collector Jonathan Green is known primarily for painting everyday life of the Gullah people, and the rural inland marshes and surrounding Sea Islands of South Carolina, near where he was born and raised. Work, family celebrations, prayer, storytelling, and a variety of recreational activities are documented in Green's paintings, reflecting his intrinsic sense of history and place. Often referred to as one of the most culturally significant African-American Artists of our time, Green is a master in showing the simple beauty that revolves around our everyday tasks. In the artist's own words: "I am drawn to rural environments that afford a sense of space and silence and an opportunity to unobtrusively observe daily functions of others as we all purse life's mission of work, love, and belonging. Agrarian life allows me to experience how we work in harmony with the mysterious and changing fabric of nature. It is the small, but critical tasks of daily life that I find most simulating and reflective of the quality of essential, personal, community, and social values."
