Lionel Bulmer and Margaret Green - one the most celebrated painting partnerships of the twentieth century, moved from their London home in the 1950s to live at Stowmarket, in rural West Suffolk and from there the beaches of Southwold, the sandy dunes and bathers at Walberswick became a key subject for them. The critic, Ian Collins, once wrote that in Bulmer's paintings 'the season appears to be one of permanent summer, and leisure is always in the air.' Indeed, it is this same sentiment in Bulmer's sun-filled paintings that is repeatedly witnessed in the art history of East Anglia, which has attracted artists from far and wide to live and work in the coastal communities that grew to rival the artist colonies of Newlyn and St Ives.

(8 7/8 x 9 1/2 in) After studying initially at her local art school in Hartlepool, Green moved on to study as a scholarship student at the Royal College Art. It was during its wartime removal to Ambleside in the Lake District, that she was to meet her future husband and artistic partner, Lionel Bulmer. Together they went on to pursue an artistic life that was interwoven at every level and their mutual influence upon each other was seemingly inexhaustible. Green was a gifted teacher and in 1947 took up a post teaching at Walthamstow and later the Royal Academy Schools. However, teaching was always a means to an end - it gave Green the financial security to enable her, and Bulmer, who also spent most of his career teaching at Kingston School of Art, to pursue their painting. Their first home was in Chelsea, in Elm Park Gardens (see lot 92). Her paintings from this period depict scenes from daily life with a quiet sensibility that at once transcends and typifies the uncertainty and drabness of post war London. Later in life, Green and Bulmer moved to the Suffolk countryside where they continued to develop their artistic partnership. Green s paintings became smaller and more intimate, but always with a sense of joy and fun that reflected the artistic idyll that the couple had created. Green exhibited regularly with the London Group, the New English Art Club and at the Royal Academy. Her works are held by the Tate Gallery, the Government Art Collection and other public institutions. They went on to become collaborative partners and innovators in the post-World War II art movement, working first in London and then in Suffolk until his death in 1992, after which Green could not bring herself to paint again.
