A VICTORIAN ENGRAVED SILVER SCENT FLASK IN THE MANNER OF KATE GREENAWAY by Sampson Mordan II, London 1884, in the original fitted case. 14cm long, 1.2 troy ounces Kate (or Catherine) Greenaway (1846-1901) was a Victorian childrens book illustrator and writer. The daughter of a successful draftsman and wood engraver, she studied graphic design and art between 1858 and 1869. Her first book, Under the Window, was an instant best-seller, brought her immediate fame and was followed by numerous highly successful publications. At the same time as her writing career she excelled as a watercolourist, working with illustrators Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott. Her distinctive old-fashioned style depicted children and young ladies dressed in early 19th Century costumes in quaint settings, a style of grace and charm that transformed the childrens book market. Walter Crane described her talent as captivating the public in a remarkable way.

Greenaway, Kate (1846-1901) Portrait of a Girl in Kerchief and Collar. Circa 1880s. Oval watercolor on paper mounted to board, signed "K. Greenaway" along lower left curve, tipped to mat and framed, image 13 x 9 1/4 in., on a 17 x 13 in. board. Provenance: Argosy Book Store; Private collection, New York, purchased from above, May 1957; thence by decent to current owner. This portrait is believed to have been created in the 1880s, when Greenaway was at the height of her artistic talent and acclaim. Her publisher, Edmund Evans, hired poet Frederick Locker-Lampson to assist Greenaway with her verse writing. The two became close and Locker-Lampson, wealthy and well-connected, eventually began to help her enter London society in order to make beneficial introductions and promote her work to an affluent market. Commissions to paint the portraits of wealthy European patrons' children soon followed, as well as invitations to display her paintings at the Royal Academy. This delicate portrait of a young girl may very likely have been one such portrait.

Greenaway began a correspondence with Oxford Professor and art critic Ruskin in 1880 when he wrote to compliment her on her drawings. The two developed a long and close friendship until Ruskin's criticism of her later work ultimately eroded their relationship.

A VICTORIAN SILVER MUG, by Edward Charles Brown, London 1876, of straight-sided tapering form with reeded handle, engraved in the style of Kate Greenaway with two girls at a window, further engraved with foliage and a monogram dated March 13 1877. 9.5cm high, 5.6 troy ounces Kate Greenaway (or Catherine Greenaway) (1846-1901) was a Victorian children’s book illustrator and writer. The daughter of a successful draftsman and wood engraver, she studied graphic design and art between 1858 and 1869. Her first book “Under the Window” was an instant best seller and brought her immediate fame and was followed by numerous highly successful publications. At the same time as her writing career, she also excelled as a watercolourist, working with illustrators Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott. Her distinctive old fashioned style depicted children and young ladies dressed in early 19th Century costume in quaint settings, a style of grace and charm that transformed the children’s book market, her talent described by Walter Crane as “captivating the public in a remarkable way”
