MOSES GREENLEAF MAP OF THE STATE OF MAINE

      Est: $18,000 - $22,000

GREENLEAF, Moses (1777-1834). Map of the State of Maine with the Province of New Brunswick by Moses Greenleaf. Engraved map with original hand color. Philadelphia: Young & Dankworth [AND[ Portland: Shirley & Hyde, 1829. 52 1/2" x 42" sheet. With "A Statistical View of the District of Maine; More Especially with Reference to the Value and Importance of its Interior. Addressed to the Consideration of the Legislators of Massachusetts." (Boston: Cummings & Hilliard, 1816 8vo (9 1/2 x 5 1/2 in.; 24.1 x 14 cm) and Crosby Smith's "Moses Greenleaf. Maine's First Mapmaker." Bangor, Maine: Printed for the De Burians, 1902. 4to (8 x 6 1/4 in.; 20.3 x 15.9 cm). Applying the language in the Treaty of Paris of 1873 to Maine's border with New Brunswick, as Greenfield did in his 1829 map of Maine, threatened English geopolitical interests, foresaw the "Aroostook War," led to a failed international arbitration and finally prompted major concessions by the United States in 1841. The Treaty of Paris began its description of the northern boundary of the United States at a point defined as "the Northwest Angle of Nova Scotia; Viz.; that Angle which is formed by a Line drawn due North from the Source of St. Croix River [in modern Maine] to the Highlands." Then the boundary was to run "along the said Highlands which divide those Rivers that empty themselves into the River St. Lawrence and those which fall into the Atlantic Ocean, to the northwesternmost head of Connecticut River..." From there, the boundary ran down that river to the 45th parallel, then west to the River Iroquois, then through the Great lakes and on to the west.
