After ruling the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily for over two decades, Charles of Bourbon was called to ascend the Spanish throne as Charles III in 1759, following the death of his half-brother, Ferdinand VI. This transition marked the end of his reign in Southern Italy. Before departing, Charles ensured a stable succession in Naples, as he was unable to unite the Neapolitan and Spanish crowns, he abdicated in favour of his third son, Ferdinand, who became King Ferdinand IV of Naples at just eight years old. On his departure from Naples in October 1759, Charles left behind a transformed city. His reign had brought significant reforms in administration, economy, and culture. He promoted infrastructure projects, modernised agriculture, and supported the arts, shaping Naples into a more progressive kingdom. The present paintings depict the moment Charles of Bourbon set sail for Spain with a flotilla of ships, as he embarked on a new mission: strengthening the Spanish monarchy and implementing reforms that would define his legacy.

BELEBTE MEDITERRANE HAFENANSICHT Öl auf Kupferplatte. 20 x 30 cm. In vergoldetem Rahmen. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Dr. Fabrizio Dossi mit ausführlichen Literaturangaben. Von erhöhtem Standpunkt Blick auf das weite Meer, in das von rechts eine Landzunge mit einem hohen Turm und einer ankernden Fregatte in Schräglage und kleineren Booten ragt. Auf dem ruhigen hellblauen Meer zwei prachtvolle Fregatten mit reicher Takelage, geöffneten Luken und Beflaggung, dazu zwei weitere besetzte Boote unter hohem Himmel. Am linken Bildrand die Seite eines herrschaftlichen Gebäudes mit Balkon und Markise, vor dem drei Männer, darunter zwei Orientalen mit Turban, in Verhandlung sind. Im Hintergrund eine bergige Landschaft die farblich das Meer und den Himmelsbereich verbindet. Feine harmonische Malerei in der für den Künstler typischen Manier; der hier gezeigte hohe Turm ist mehrfach auch auf anderen Werken des Künstlers wiederzufinden. L. van Grevenbroeck h: 16,50 w: 22,50 cm Provenance : Collection particulière, Provence Commentaire : Flamand d'origine, Charles-Léopold van Grevenbroeck fut reçu à Paris à l'Académie royale en 1732 et imposa son style original de vues urbaines méticuleusement décrites lors des Salons entre 1738 et 1743. Notre charmant petit cuivre nous plonge dans le Paris du milieu du XVIIIe siècle et plus particulièrement dans un lieu rarement représenté, à savoir la rive droite de la Seine en amont de l'île Saint Louis, juste à l'intérieur de l'enceinte de la ville. L'élégant hôtel particulier que nous apercevons sur la gauche est l'Arsenal, à sa gauche le couvent des Célestins et enfin à droite l'île Louviers qui sera postérieurement rattachée à la rive droite. En ce XVIIIe siècle, les stocks de bois qui y étaient conservés devaient nécessairement être à la fois isolés en cas d'incendie mais aussi se tenir au sein de la ville tant ce matériau était précieux. Dans son 'Tableau de Paris', Louis-Sébastien Mercier nous livre les clefs de compréhension sur l'importance des stocks de bois : " La consommation de bois est devenue effrayante (…) Ce bois que le fleuve amène, et qu'on entasse en piles hautes, comme des maisons, va disparaitre dans l'espace de trois mois. Vous le voyez en pyramides quarrées ou triangulaires, qui vous dérobent la vue des environs ; il sera mesuré, porté, scié, brûlé, et il n'y aura plus que la place. Autrefois, ce qui composait le domestique, se chauffait à un foyer commun ; aujourd'hui la femme de chambre a sa cheminée, le précepteur a sa cheminée, etc. 1" 1.
