In recollection of his beloved Mother from the dear Prince's devoted & sorrowing widow Victoria RI, April 25. 1867" to front free endpaper, engraved portrait frontispiece and 19 mounted photographic plates, tissue-guards, gutter broken with some text leaves and a few plates loose, including front free endpapers, half-title and frontispiece, pp.14-15 browned, a few leaves slightly frayed at edges, occasional light soiling (heavier to a few plates), some spotting to endpapers, original cloth, gilt, spine slightly mottled and with short tear to head, spine ends, corners and upper joint quite worn, lightly rubbed elsewhere, upper joint split at foot, 8vo, Printed for private circulation by Smith, Elder and Co., 1866.

Note: a label verso refers to a pencil inscription on the stretcher and states that the horse was given to the artist by Lord Powerscourt. See Walter George Strickland, A Dictionary of Irish Artists vol 1, page 411 which outlines the connection with Viscount Powerscourt.

    Charles Grey (c.1808-1892) - A Boy in a Landscape with a Pair of Spaniels

    Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1837 lower left 110 x 142.5 cm.(43 1/4 x 56 1/8 in) Exhibited: Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts, 1837, no. 59 (titled: Play Fellows ) The present painting is from the early period of Grey s work, and was possibly exhibited at his first showing at the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts in 1837. Grey exhibited five works at the 1837 show, and at this point was based in Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin. Originally born in Greenock, Scotland, Grey travelled to Ireland as a young man and established himself in Dublin as a portrait painter. He eventually confined himself mainly to views of Scottish scenery, but the present painting shows the youthful beginnings of his artistic endeavours.

Dimensions of photograph 3 by 2 ins. Walking stick 29.5 by 2 ins. The walking stick includes a silver strap in the form of a belt, engraved "Charles Gray [sic] from HRH The Prince of Wales, Sandringham, Jany [January] 1871". Charles Grey was the favourite of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII).

    Grey, Charles. (1729-1807) British general who served in the Seven Years War, the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary War; 1st Earl Grey. In 1777 he earned the nickname "No-flint Grey" after the Paoli Massacre nighttime attack, because he had collected flints from the muskets of his troops before they engaged the American troops using bayonets, thus maintaining the element of surprise. His son was the Prime Minister Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey. Manuscript Document Signed as General Commanding the Southern District, two pages, 12 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches, Maidstone, Jan. 4, 1798. "Account of Contingent Expences for His Majesty's Service...from 1st to 31st December 1797...." fine condition. Grey's signature is bold. Estimated Value $400 - 600, Goodspeeds, 1966

    Gregor Grey (fl.1870s-1911) HER FIRST BROOD, 1887 signed and dated lower left oil on canvas 71 by 91cm., 28 by 36in. Exhibited: RHA, Dublin, 1887, catalogue no. 61 @40-0-0) Gregor Grey was the son of Charles Grey RHA (c.1808-1892) and brother of the painters Alfred Grey RHA (1845-1926), Edwin Landseer Grey and James Grey and the engraver Charles Malcolm Grey. Gregor exhibited every year at the RHA from 1877 to 1911, averaging three to four exhibits a year - the most that a non-RHA member could possibly hope to have accepted. He also showed twice at the Oireachtas Art Exhibitions of 1906 and 1907. His works tended to be on a rustic theme and featured quaint, anecdotal titles. Grey earned - albeit unwittingly - some modicum of posterity when James Joyce included in Ulysses a character called Gregor Grey who was the designer of Gallaher's map and whose career was given "a leg up" by illustrating an advertisement. Lots 129 to 133 are from a single private collection.
