    FRANTIŠEK GROSS 1909 - 1985 - SPOTLIGHTS

    Est: -

Industrial landscapes and nooks and crannies of the city periphery are among the most frequent subjects in the work of František Gross. The same is true of the civilian still life with reflectors, which excels in vivid colors, a feeling for the geometric arrangement of the displayed elements and the rhythm of light and darkness. Painter and graphic artist František Gross, he was one of the leading representatives of Group 42 and the creative group Radar. He graduated from CTU with prof. O. Blažíček and the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague with prof. F. Kysela, where he also met F. Hudeček, with whom he then had a long-standing friendship. In the years 1933-34, he became acquainted with surrealism, which in connection with its previous cubist tendencies became a good breeding ground for absurdity and grotesque. He organized the first exhibition with L. Zívr in his native Nová Paka. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Upper right "Fr. Gross 33"

Industrial landscapes, machines and outskirts of cities are featured very often in František Gross's art. This is also the case for the Social Civilist-style still life with a drill, which is remarkable for its vivid color and sense of geometric arrangement. Painter and graphic artist František Gross was a leading exponent of Group 42 and Radar art groups. He studied at the Czech Technical University under Professor O. Blažíček and at the School of Applied Arts under Professor František Kysela. Here he met František Hudeček and the two forged a lifelong friendship. In 1933–34 he became acquainted with surrealism, which combined with his Cubist tendencies offered fertile ground for absurdism and humor. He held his first exhibition with Ladislav Zívr in his hometown of Nová Paka. Technique: Oil on plywood, Signed: Lower right "F. Gross"

    CYCLISTS

    Est: -

Pastel on paper. Signed top center: MATAL.53 The subject of cyclists starts to appear in the artist's work in 1946. As the youngest member of Group 42, in which he became familiar with the work of František Gross, František Hudeček, Jan Smetana, Jan Kotík, Kamil Lhoták and others, he was also influenced by Social Civilist themes of man over machine and man-athlete. Cyclists predominated in Matal's work until the late 1950s, when the structure of the image slowly transitioned into increasingly freer geometric color fields. During the 1950s, Bohumír Matal and Jánuš Kubíček founded the Brno-based art group later called Brno 57, which other major artists also ascribed to. Matal liked people, colors and life. The artist resurrected art techniques that had no longer been taught in art school. A Renaissance man, he also worked in theater, stage design and architecture.

FRANTISEK GROSS (1909–1985): LANDSCAPE WITH GASWORKS

    Est: -

/ 1945 / Oil on cardboard. Dedicated, signed and dated lower left "Olince F. GROSS 1945" / 35 x 49,5 cm A fascination with the industrial landscape, factories and large machinery is a common theme in a number of Gross's paintings and drawings. This painting, dedicated to his love Olina, is a very rare work from his Group 42 period. His membership placed his work in context with civilization. After the group disbanded due to the conflicting opinions of its members, he almost completely stopped painting for several years. The lingering influence of Cubism, which influenced his work in the 1930s, is evident in the earthy tones used in the painting. The theme of a gasometer, especially the one in Prague-Libeň, first appeared in his drawings in as early as 1931, which he drew by flashlight under the covers while he was performing his military service at Prague-Invalidovna.
