Carl Großberg, der nach einem Architekturstudium bereits im Alter von 19 Jahren unter dem Einfluss Lyonel Feiningers am Bauhaus ausgebildet wurde, bewahrte stets sein großes architektonisches und technisches Interesse. In dem vorliegenden Aquarell präsentiert er ausschnitthaft vor dunklem Nachthimmel einen mächtigen Brückenpfeiler, der in einem faszinierenden, fast abstrakten Farbspiel aus Blau, Grün und Gelb reflektiert. Provenance: Collection of Justus Bier; thence by descent to current owner. Justus Bier (1899-1990) was a German American art historian who championed the Bauhaus and contemporary German artists of the 1930s, including Paul Klee, Lionel Feininger, and Carl Grossberg, the latter of whom Bier befriended and profiled several times during the 1920s and 1930s. Grossberg (1894-1940) was trained at the Bauhaus and became a successful artist and interior designer during the 1930s, known for his meticulous portraits of new technology and machinery. Bier also found success during this time. He was curator of the Kestner Society and Museum in Hanover from 1930 until 1936, when the Society was closed by the Nazi government and Bier exiled. Alternatively, Grossberg remained in Germany and was drafted into military service in 1939. He died following an automobile accident in France a year later. After emigrating to the United States, Bier taught art history at the University of Kentucky, eventually chairing the department from 1946 to 1960. In 1960, Bier became the director of the North Carolina Museum of Art, and continued to lead the organization until his retirement in 1970.

Weimar, Straßenansicht mit Turm -- Feder in Schwarz, aquarelliert, auf dünnem Bütten. 1920. -- 37,2 x 31,5/32,5 cm. -- Unten rechts mit Feder in Schwarz mit dem Künstlersignet "CG" und datiert sowie signiert "Grossberg" und bezeichnet "Weimar". -- -- 19-jährig begann Carl Grossberg ein Studium der Architektur in Aachen und wechselte nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg an die Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Weimar, bevor er als Schüler Lyonel Feiningers ans Bauhaus kam. So galt sein Interesse Anfang der 1910er Jahre überwiegend Stadtansichten wie der hier vorliegenden Darstellung von Weimar, die noch ganz unter dem Einfluss seines Lehrers standen. In abendlichem Dämmerlicht lenkt Grossberg den Blick auf eine Straßenbiegung, gesäumt von bauklotzartigen Gebäuden und einem etwas windschiefen Turm. Sein späteres Interesse an Industrie- und Technikdarstellungen offenbart sich in einigen Hochspannungsmasten, die rechts in den abendlichen Himmel ragen. § Carl Grossberg (German,1894-1940) A Town View signed bottom left "Carl Grosssberg, Bav.1922" watercolour and ink h:31 w:25 cm Carl Grossberg studied architecture in Aachen before serving in the Army during the First World War. Later, he studied at the Weimar Academy and at the Bauhaus, where he specialised in paintings of factories, industrial sites and urban landscapes. Grossberg was associated with the New Objectivity Movement in Weimar along with Georg Grosz, Otto Dix and Max Beckmann. The aim of this movement was to challenge Expressionism with a realistic and unsentimental style. Grossberg again served in the Army during the Second World War during which time he was killed in a car crash.
