    Aug. 17, 2023

(Map - South America) South America Under the Axis or the Heil with the Monroe Doctrine

    Est: $120 - $150

South America. John Groth, South America Under the Axis or the Heil with the Monroe Doctrine, from Ken Magazine, 1938 (published). Printed Color. This satirical map denounces the infiltration of the Axis powers in South America just prior to the outbreak of WWII. Images of German, Italian and Japanese salesmen and military forces appear throughout the continent. Looming in the skies above are forceful winds created by "Adolf the Enforcer, Benito the Black Bomber and 'Gentleman' Hirota, the Yellow Kid," as described in the text below the map. Images of violence abound, with a citizen in Venezuela "saved from communism" by being gutted with a bayonet, and Rafael Trujillo stabbing a woman in the Dominican Republic to "make room for German settlers." Goods manufactured in Germany, Italy and Japan arrive in cargo ships. Drawn by John Groth and published in the second issue of Ken Magazine (21 April 1938), a controversial anti-fascist magazine. On verso are satirical cartoons of Japanese General Kenji Doihara and Benito Mussolini.
