(Venice 1830–1919 Pula) Venice, the Return of the Quadriga of St. Mark and the the Winged Lion, signed Gio. Grubas Pix, oil on canvas, 68 x 114 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Italy. The present painting is an idealised representation of the return of the Quadriga of St Mark to Venice in 1815. These renowned sculptures, cast from a high-copper alloy and originally gilded, were long believed to have been displayed at the Hippodrome of Constantinople before being seized by Venetian forces in 1204 during the sack of the Byzantine capital. Shortly after the Fourth Crusade, Doge Enrico Dandolo had them transported to Venice, where they were placed on the upper loggia of St Mark’s Basilica. Over the centuries, their fame grew, partly due to paintings and prints purchased by foreign visitors. Following the conquest of Venice in 1797, Napoleon ordered the horses to be removed and taken to Paris, where they were installed atop the Arc du Carrousel, a newly constructed triumphal arch celebrating his military victories. After 18 years in France, the sculptures were finally returned to Venice on 13 December 1815, following Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, as part of the wider European restitution of looted artworks. The winged lion, the symbol of St Mark depicted in this painting, was also taken by the French in 1797. It was displayed in the Musée des Monuments Français in Paris before being returned to Venice in 1815. The painting captures the moment when the four horses and the winged lion stand on a wooden platform, surrounded by soldiers and gondolas in the Bacino of San Marco. The enthusiasm of the Venetian crowd is palpable, as is the careful orchestration of the ceremony by the Austrian authorities, whose flags wave prominently beside the sculptures—for the city had been awarded to Austria at the Congress of Vienna (1814–15). Their return was widely celebrated, with the Austrians overseeing the reinstallation as part of the broader restoration of Venetian heritage.

(Venice 1830–1919 Pula) Venice, View of the Molo with the Libreria and the Doge’s Palace, signed Gio. Grubas, oil on canvas, 65 x 101 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Italy. Giovanni Grubas, just like his father Carlo Grubas, specialised in Venetian vedute, such as the present lot. Both father and son followed the great tradition set by Canaletto and Guardi a century earlier, when Venice was an obligatory stop on the Grand Tour. This lively view of the Molo is animated by figures reflecting the unique atmosphere of Venetian life in the 19th century. From the left, it depicts the Libreria designed by Jacopo Sansovino, and the columns of San Marco and San Teodoro. These two columns of red and grey granite were brought over from the Orient in the twelfth century. In the centre is the Palazzo Ducale and to its right is the Ponte della Paglia. The artist worked outdoors, directly from nature.
