Lemann, New Orleans, Louisiana. Notes: Gruber attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One of the first proponents of using plexiglass as an artistic material, she convinced a local engineering company to allow her to set up a studio in their factory so she would have access to their machinery. Employing a process she created, Gruber pressed thin sheets of variously hued plexiglass into molds. In 1968, she took part in the "Made in Plastic" exhibition at the Institute of Art in Flint, Michigan; it was the first show of its kind and its popularity with critics, scholars and collectors was immediate. When asked about her preferred material, Gruber said, "I like its transparency, the overlapping of colors forming other colors and the effect of contained light within...it is one thing by day and another thing by night."

Gruber, Aaronel de Roy Kinetic Sculpture, 1970, Acrylic and stainless steel

            Est: $800 - $1,200

(American, 1918-2011) Aaronel studied with several outstanding professors in the instituteÕs College of Fine Arts: Samuel Rosenberg, Roy Hilton,Wilfred Readio, and Robert Lepper, who would also later inspire Andy Warhol and Philip Pearlstein. Aaronel began crafting precisely made steel and Plexiglas kinetic objects and became an innovator in the growing field of polymer and motor-driven sculpture. She again studied with Samuel Rosenberg in an experimental workshop. A social realist painter turned abstractionist, Rosenberg encouraged freedom of expression, analysis, and constructive critiques Asked in 1978 why she wanted to use this difficult medium, Aaronel said, ÒI like its transparency, the overlapping of colors forming other colors and the effect of contained light within. When the sculpture is motorized, it takes on a life of its own. It is one thing by day and another by night. Sculpture moving at slow revolutions suggests the orbits of the sun and the moon and makes objects appear to change by casting them in new attitudes.Ó*

            Aaronel deRoy Gruber (American/Pennsylvania)

            Est: $2,500 - $3,500

Aaronel deRoy Gruber (American/Pennsylvania, 1918-2011), "Untitled: Tower in Pink, Orange, Blue and Gray", Plexiglas, unsigned, h. 74 in., w. 23 in., d. 23 1/2 in., black Plexiglas base, overall h. 86 1/4 in. Provenance: Collection of Michael Brown and Linda Green, New Orleans. Note: Originally a painter, Aaronel deRoy Gruber began by creating vast paintings then trying her hand at three-dimensions by manipulating her canvases to jut outward into sculptural reliefs. Upon her introduction to sculptor David Smith in 1961, Gruber found herself charmed by the possibility of forging works from steel discords. The fascination with sculpture would later translate to her Plexiglas pieces, a medium the artist enjoyed, “I like its transparency, the overlapping of colors forming other colors and the effect of contained light within.” The play with color and light is showcased in the lot offered here, a monumental tower containing layers of multicolor Plexiglas visible from the outside. As she described her work, “I interplay convex and concave forms to create a feeling of balancing on the edge of a precipice, like an odd-shaped sphere stopped in action and made to balance in a moment in time.” Ref.: “About Aaronel deRoy Gruber.” Aaronel deRoy Gruber. www.aarnel.com.
