The sheet depicts a study of three flowers, amongst them are two blue hyacinths and one yellow clove. It is a characteristic work by the artist of a very finely and detailed rendered floral study. The work is framed under a mat. The print with full margins is in an overall well preserved condition with minimal traces of wear and age. The paper is slightly yellowed. The dimensions of the sheet are 39.3 x 26.8 cm. Franz Xaver Gruber (1801-1862) The Austrian Franz Xaver Gruber is mainly known for his flower and genre motifs. In 1817, he joined the Vienna Academy and took part in some lectures of the famous botanist Jacquin. Later, he himself became the professor of the department of flower and fruit painting. Additionally, he was in charge of the elementary school of the Academy for a period of 17 years. Journeys through Austria and Italy followed, as well as important commissions for botanical portfolios, for example a collection of 120 watercolours with all species of camellias for prime minister Prince Metternich (1859), and a series of orchids and palms for Emperor Ferdinand (1849). From early on, his work has been honoured with awards and prizes. Most works of the very comprehensive oeuvre of Gruber are located in Vienna, and further parts in Hamburg, Brussels and Paris.
