Jules-Alexandre Grun, Concert de la Pepiniere / Je vais le dire a ta mere

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

Jules-Alexandre Grun Concert de la Pepiniere / Je vais le dire a ta mere 1902 51.25 h x 36.75 w in (130 x 93 cm) Known for his bootylicious and buxom broads, this image by Grun does not fail to deliver his signature delights. At the Pepiniere, we are being tempted by this saucy brunette to attend the year-end review, "I'm gonna tell your momma," a title remarkably similar to many popular cabaret reviews of the 1910s and 1920s—apparently, the threat of parental knowledge of one's lascivious deeds is a titillating, eternal theme. Imp. J. Thil, Paris Literature: Grun p. 59; Timeless Images, 18; Weill, p. 45; PAI-LXVIII, 413 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

  • Jules-Alexandre Grun, Le Sourire / Cappiello aux Salons
    Mar. 05, 2025

Jules-Alexandre Grun, Le Sourire / Cappiello aux Salons

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

Jules-Alexandre Grun Le Sourire / Cappiello aux Salons 1900 49.125 h x 34.375 w in (125 x 87 cm) "On October 28, 1899 Maurice Mery launches Le Sourire, to compete against Le Rire, which was very successful since its inception in 1894. As editor he hires Alphonse Allais, one of the masters of French humor and ex-manager of the Chat Noir from 1886 through 1891. Allais becomes the driving force of Le Sourire until his death in 1905. In order to increase sales, the magazine publishes a poster in 1905 in which a Grunette displays an issue of Le Sourire showing Alphonse Allais, caricatured by Cappiello, enthroned on the cover page. In the rear, on a black background, two town councilors are doubled up with laughter. A peculiar and unusual detail: a man's clenched fist is pulling on her red dress. In May 1905 Le Sourire announces the publication of a special plate: 'A Bonus-poster! We are pleased to offer this plate free of charge to our subscribers. No copy will ever be sold in the stores and it will attain additional value since it is the result of rare collaboration, especially with artists of such caliber.' One notes that the value of the posters was already a sales argument. Oddly enough, in view of what is said in the ad, this poster should have been relatively common—which is far from being the case. The answer lies perhaps in the fact that one was charged for the 'bonus' plate" (Grun, p. 108). Imp. Chaix, Paris Literature: Grun, p. 108; Cappiello, 229; PAI-XC, 258 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

  • Jules-Alexandre Grun, Treteau de Tabarin / La Boite a Fursy
    Mar. 05, 2025

Jules-Alexandre Grun, Treteau de Tabarin / La Boite a Fursy

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

Jules-Alexandre Grun Treteau de Tabarin / La Boite a Fursy 1901 47 h x 34.375 w in (119 x 87 cm) "Although his cabaret was going tremendously well, Fursy was thirsty for revenge. His ex-partner, Ropiquet, had found no one of the same caliber as a replacement and was witnessing the collapse of his business. He finally went bankrupt in 1901. The owner of the premises, Lajunie, who had opened the first deluxe restaurant in Montmartre and who had made a fortune, contacted Fursy who wasted no time returning to Pigalle where he merged his two cabarets on June 17, 1901. Again the inevitable Grun is in charge of advertising. In the background he places his two previous posters and a radiant beauty, dressed in pale green with a hat bedecked with yellow flowers in the foreground. At this time his palette is growing richer and wider" (Grun, p. 38). Imp. Chaix, Paris Literature: Grun, p. 38; PAI-XCII, 232 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Here is a work of unquestionable quality where the painter rediscovers the rules of his first passion - the poster" (Grun p. 137). Grun p. 137.

    Nov. 12, 2024

Jules-Alexandre Grun, Scala / Enfin, Seuls!

    Est: $1,400 - $1,700

Jules-Alexandre Grun Scala / Enfin, Seuls! 1899 34.75 h x 23.75 w in (88 x 60 cm) Here's an unusually chaste and romantic design by Grun, who was the enfant terrible of the more salacious realms of the Parisian dance-hall. Chaste, that is, only because the censors intervened; the ravishing bride was originally completely nude for the "grand spectacle" of the revue "Alone At Last!" This is the censored, smaller format version of the poster. But don't let that get you down; the lady's bodice is erotic enough as it stands. Imp. Chaix, Paris Literature: Grun, p. 60; Spectacle, 1331; PAI-LXXIII, 313 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

Jules-Alexandre Grun Decadent's Concert 17.125 h x 21.5 w in (43 x 55 cm) The lascivious hijinks one expects from Grun aren't present in this woodblock-inspired black-on-sepia paper invitation for the Decadents cabaret. Of course, the Montmartre night is still young. But what is abundantly manifested is that anyone who was anyone from every walk of life was making a beeline for the decadently diversionary evening. "The Decadents cafe-concert was located at 16 bis rue Fontaine. Marguerite Duclerc, after having gained tremendous success at Ambassadeurs, took over direction [of the venue] in 1896. The establishment from that point on was called Concerts Duclerc" (Spectacle, p. 248). Literature: PAI-XXXVII, 338 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

    Nov. 12, 2024

    Jules-Alexandre Grun, Folies-Bergere / Napoli

    Est: $2,000 - $2,600

Jules-Alexandre Grun Folies-Bergere / Napoli 1901 48.625 h x 34.5 w in (124 x 88 cm) "At the beginning of 1901, on January 29 to be more specific, the Folies-Bergere presented a ballet pantomime using the standard type of show in four scenes, baptized 'Napoli.' As usual, the dullness of the plot was surpassed only by its unlikelihood—in this instance an aristocrat being seduced by a Neapolitan singer (who, as may be seen on the poster, was a transvestite). The couple, against a saraband background, is colored and charming. As on many of his posters at the time, Grun displays a caption in a small circle at the bottom right saying, 'If this seal is not white, this poster cannot be sold or given away.' As usual, this copy is illegal, which did not prevent its owner from being delighted and going scot-free!" (Grun, p. 67). This poster is one such example of Grun's attempt to keep his posters off the market—well, sorry, old pal. Imp. Chaix, Paris Literature: DFP-II, 438; Grun, p. 67 (var); PAI-LXXXII, 287 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Jules-Alexandre Grun Bal Tabarin 1904 48.5 h x 32.5 w in (123 x 83 cm) In 1904, the owner of the Tabarin expanded his operation, commissioning Grun to announce the wild and exciting experiences available within his establishment's walls. While the second version of this poster, featuring two white men and a brunette, is the most well known (and common), this is the extraordinarily rare initial design. Imp. • Jules-Alexandre Grun, Automobile Club de France
    Nov. 12, 2024

Jules-Alexandre Grun, Automobile Club de France

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

Jules-Alexandre Grun Automobile Club de France 1905 46.5 h x 61.875 w in (118 x 157 cm) "The Automobile Club de France was created on the initiative of three automobile enthusiasts, the Comte de Dion, Paul Meyran, and the Baron de Zuylen who became its president upon its inception on November 2, 1895. It is under his leadership that the competitions and the main salons took place. As proven by this poster, the salon did not only cater to races and tourism but also to the industrial and military vehicles—important markets as well. Beginning with the army maneuvers in 1900, the generalissimo only traveled by automobile. The army is outfitted with Georges Richard and Mors vehicles and Renault enters fully into the military market. In 1905 Grun discovers the world of color. He doesn't fall into the trap of trying to describe—which would have been impossible. He decides to evoke. In the foreground a gendarme, saluting at attention, on the left a joyous crowd and in the background, standing out against the setting sun, as in a shadowgraph, a stream of barely identifiable vehicles" (Grun, p. 102). • Jules-Alexandre Grun, Le Sourire / Cappiello aux Salons
    Nov. 12, 2024

Jules-Alexandre Grun, Le Sourire / Cappiello aux Salons

    Est: $2,400 - $3,000

    Soirée des Affiches Réclames. 1909.

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: JULES-ALEXANDRE GRÜN (1868-1938) SIZE: 23 1/8 x 30 3/4 in./58.8 x 78.3 cm PRINTER: Imp. Ch. Verneau, Paris DESCRIPTION: Here’s quite a pair: a billposter and a coquettish young woman who appears to have leaped off the poster that he was employed to paste to the walls of Paris. The truly charming poster-within-a-poster design promotes a late March Advertising Poster Party, an unbridled affair whose inner-poster calls attention to itself with a Chinese lantern hanging from a high-kicked heel. Rare! (Art Nouveau; Posters on Posters)

Périodique - Jules Alexandre Grün (1868-1934) - Le Geste. 38,5x26cm.

Provenance : Honfleur. Vente de l'atelier Grün, Camard, 1982.
