Johann Gustav Grunewald (1805-1878) After an apprenticeship as a varnisher, Grunewald enrolled at the Art Academy in Dresden for landscape painting in 1820 and became a pupil of Gottlieb Seyfert, Carl August Richter and Carl Franz Edlinger. Already in the same year he took part in the Academy’s exhibitions, followed by others in the course of the years (1821, 1822, 1824, 1839). For some time he was a private student of Caspar David Friedrich and Grunewald’s early work is heavily influenced by the early romanticism of his teacher. After he returned to his hometown Gnadau, he tried to gain a foothold there as freelance painter, however, he had great difficulty. Through the Academy Professor Gottfried Wilhelm Völcker he managed to sell one of his works (Evening Landscape, 1824; now in the Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin). Around 1828/30 Grunewald tried to get in touch with the art scene in Magdeburg, whereby still based in Gnadau. Finally, he emigrated to America with his wife Marie Justine Lehmann. From 1832 onwards, he took part in the annual exhibitions of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and commissions by the Brethren and their families followed. In 1836 he was appointed drawing-master of the Moravian Seminary characters for Young Ladies, a function he occupied for 30 years. In 1867 he returned to Germany, traveling through Switzerland, Italy, Tyrol, Austria and Germany. In 1869 Grunewald permanently settled down in Gnadenberg. His works are represented in numerous international museums and collections, for example in Herrnhut, Königsfeld, New York, Hong Kong, Bjärred and Bethlehem (Pennsylvania).
