Gu Jianlong (1606-1687), 'Courtly Lady looks in the Mirror"

        Est: €1,200 - €1,500

Painting/Ink on paper and silk, mounted on paper China, early Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) Gu Jianlong (1606-ca. 1687) - court painter for the emperors Shunzhi and Kangxi Artist's signature and seal by Gu Jianlong Very fine painting and intense colours Measurements total: 62.5 cm x 180 cm Measurements of the painting: 51.5 cm x 115.5 cm Provenance: from an old Viennese private collection This fine scroll painting was created by Gu Jianlong (1606- ca. 1687), who worked as court painter for Emperor Shunzhi (reigned 1644-1661) and Emperor Kangxi (reigned 1662-1722). The painting tells a turbulent story with its marks and seals; it carries a poem by the public servant Yao Yuanzhi (1773-1852); Japanese characters reveal that it once was there, before actually becoming part of a Viennese collection. The painting captivates through its exceptionally fine and highly detailed depiction of the interior and is also has very strong colours; the blue of the garment is particularly noteworthy. The painting strives for perspectival accuracy and ultimately attains it by way of the background window; it has light blue curtains and presents a view of an overgrown Taihu rock. The beautiful woman in the foreground has hair drawn with high precision. She is observing her reflection in a bronze hand mirror. According to the poem, as she is looking, she wishes never to age. The nobility of this scene is heightened by the chrysanthemums and peonies, which are classic symbols of beauty and wealth in China. The landscape on the folding screen is another very beautiful detail which demonstrates the full extent of the artist's proficiency. The scroll painting has visible traces of age and use, folds, repaired tears and surface scratches. Despite the age-related signs of use, the painting retained its intense colour. The mount has tears, abrasions and stains. The total measurements are 62.5 cm x 180 cm (width by height) and the painting itself measures 51.5 x 115.5 cm.
