SATISH GUJRAL (1925-2020) UNTITLED, SIGNED TOP LEFT, ACRYLIC ON CANVAS Size: 53.5 x 36 inches Property of Mr & Mrs Gupta Family, New Delhi Footnotes: Emerging from the crucible of pre-Partition Punjab, Satish Gujral epitomized artistic prowess across myriad realms—painting, sculpture, murals, and architecture. Born on December 25, 1925, in Jhelum, his journey into the realm of creativity was spurred by familial encouragement, blossoming amidst the backdrop of childhood adversity, where a tragic accident robbed him of speech and hearing.Guided by the hallowed halls of Mayo School of Art, Lahore, and briefly by the artistic enclave of Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, Gujral forged a path uniquely his own, diverging from the Progressive Artists’ Group to embrace a singular vision of Indian modernism. The crucible of personal upheaval and the seismic shifts of Partition lent an indelible hue to his artistic oeuvre, channeling pain into poignant expressions. A sojourn to Mexico in 1952 proved transformative, where he imbibed the essence of muralism from luminaries like Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, crafting monumental works in mosaic and ceramic, and embracing unconventional mediums like burnt wood and steel. His architectural opus, notably the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi, earned global acclaim, hailed as a pinnacle of twentieth-century design. Gujral's accolades, spanning from the Da Vinci Award to the Padma Vibhushan, stand as a testament to his enduring legacy. As the curtain fell on his earthly odyssey on March 26, 2020,

(41.9 x 54.3cm) Provenance Private Collection, New York. Lot Essay Satish Gujral was a prominent Indian artist known for his diverse body of work that encompassed painting, sculpture, and architecture. Tarojan Horse is a significant painting that reflects his deep engagement with both art and socio-political themes. In this work, Gujral's distinctive style is evident, characterized by bold, abstract forms and a fusion of traditional and contemporary elements. The painting alludes to the historical myth of the Trojan Horse, which he uses as a metaphor to comment on political deception and the hidden agendas within society. The horse, a symbol of both power and deceit, is rendered with a sense of ambiguity and mystery, inviting viewers to contemplate its meaning. Tarojan Horse exemplifies his ability to combine artistic expression with thought-provoking commentary, reflecting the complexities of the human condition and the societal challenges of his time. His work continues to be celebrated for its multi-layered narratives and artistic innovation.

          Satish Gujral Original Collage 1968

          Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Satish Gujral (Pakistani/Indian, 1925-2020). Mixed media collage on board titled "Kali on the Mount" depicting a whimsical figure, 1968. Signed in Hindi and dated along the upper left quadrant. Provenance: Directly from the artist to a private Minnesotan collection. While the consignor's family lived in India they met Satish Gujral and became friends. While Gujral was visiting New York to work on a commission for the World Trade Center, he visited the consignor's family, who, at this point, had returned to the United States. In return for the lovely meal, he gifted them this artwork. It has been in their collection ever since. Satish Gujral was a multi-disciplinary artist that created sculptures, paintings, murals, architecture and interior design. He was considered an Avant Garde Indian artist. Gujral traveled in Mexico in 1952 and worked under Diego Rivera and David Siqueiros. Gujral was inspired by the textural qualities of the Mexican artists' works. In this collage, Gujral engaged his distinctive sense of surface quality by using mixed media collage technique to depict a whimsical figure. The figure is created with typesetting and visual references of the 1960s in its body, whose fantastical proportion inject a sense of humor and comedy into the composition. The earthy tones in the background combining with bright rich colors of the figure are referencing Gujral's Mexican past helps the figure comes alive in a joyful manifestation of grace and rhythm.
