Gustav Gurschner Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor

Born in Germany in 1873, Gustav Gurschner was a sculptor who created functional objects using the Art Nouveau style. Using the whirling, organic lines that were popular in that movement, his lamps, doorknobs, vases, and other objects are works of art designed to be incorporated into everyday life. Gustav Gurschner studied at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna and then apprenticed under several artists in Paris to hone his craft and design his own sculptures.

Many of Gurschner’s pieces, such as his figural bronze lamps, feature female figures surrounded by swirling sculpted fabric to create the Art Nouveau look. His sculptures for sale embodied some of the principles of the movement: excellent workmanship, modern designs, and bringing fine and applied arts closer together. You can explore the many vintage sculptures on offer online at Invaluable to add to your personal art collection.

Preisschiessen der für den Gebirgsdienst bestimmten Regimenter Bozen 1909 (Francis Joseph I Shooting competition of the regiments designated for alpine service Bozen 1909) SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 200 - 400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 200 Gustav Gurschner went to the Bolzano technical school for wood and stone working in 1885; For a short time he attended the technical school in Laas-Vinschgau. In 1888, on the advice of his Bozen teacher Haider, he moved to the arts and crafts school in Vienna. His teachers were August Kühne and, from 1891 to 1894, Otto König. After his military service as a one-year volunteer with the Kaiserjäger, Gurschner moved to Munich to further his training in large-scale sculpture. In 1897, Gurschner travelled to Paris, where he discovered his enthusiasm for Art Nouveau. There he was inspired by Art Nouveau artists such as Alexandre Charpentier, who encouraged him to design everyday objects and small sculptures. Gurschner produced a variety of handicraft objects such as door knockers, candlesticks, electric lamps, belt buckles and many other everyday items. Guschner took part in exhibitions of the Vienna Secession and became a member of the Hagenbund. Gurschner was also the long-time chairman of the Künstervereinigung and the Kunsthaus. Gurschner's main field of activity was portraiture. He portrayed members of the Austrian imperial family, politicians, artists, industrialists and nobles. He was an opponent of the development from expressionism to abstract art and remained true to his objective and aesthetically based ideas of art from the Art Nouveau period. In June 1914, Gurschner and Leopold Wirth initiated a campaign to recruit a volunteer army to support the Albanian Prince Wilhelm Prinz zu Wied against insurgent troops in Durrës, and was one of them Austria's first sports car drivers. At his suggestion, the k.k. Freiwillige Motorfahrerkorps (Imperial-Royal Voluntary Automobile Corps) and the k.k. Freiwillige Motorfahrerkorps (Imperial-Royal Voluntary motor driver corps) were founded for the military. As a first lieutenant (of the reserve) he was appointed commander of the k.k. Freiwilligen-Motorfahrkorps (Imperial-Royal Volunteer Motor Driving Corps). His contacts with the army were also reflected in many awards, badges and memorials for the fallen soldiers of the First World War, such as the equestrian memorial for the fallen soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Dragoon Regiment No. 14 in the Augustinian Church in Vienna. In April 1918, Gurschner was accepted into the art group of the k.u.k. Kriegspressequartier (Imperial and Royal War Press Office). Around 80 designs of army plaques Kriegsfürsorge earned him half a million crowns. Gurschner's brother Emil (1886 - 1938) was also a sculptor. The painter Herbert Gurschner (1901 - 1975) was Gustav and Emil's nephew. The “Prize Shooting of the Regiments Designated for Mountain Service” was organized by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Army held in several years, at least 1908 (Trento), 1909 (Bozen) and 1910 (Innichen). The associated medal, in different sizes and designs, was designed by Gustav Gurschner before 1908. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. GUSTAV GURSCHNER , NAUTILUS TABLE LIGHT, C. 1900

              Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Gustav Gurschner , Nautilus table light, c. 1900, Plant-like organic bronze base with Nautilus as a shade. H 49.5 cm. Sign.: GURSCHNER DEPOSE (embossed)., Gustav Gurschner (Mühldorf / Inn 1873 - 1970 Vienna). From 1885 Gurschner attended the technical school for wood and stone processing in Bolzano. In 1888 he went to the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. After his military service with the Kaiserjäger in Innsbruck (1895/96), he moved to Munich, where he studied large-scale sculpture. In 1897 he married the writer Alice Pollak (Vienna 1869 - 1944 Vienna), who published her works under the male pseudonym Paul Althof*. In the same year he traveled to Paris, where he became enthusiastic about the then burgeoning Art Nouveau. He found inspiration through his friendship with artists such as Alexandre Charpentier and designed his first everyday objects and small sculptures in a style that never lost the French influence. Back in Vienna he participated in exhibitions of the Vienna Secession. The Austrian writer Hermann Bahr wrote in his “Critical Writings”, Vol. VI, Secession, 1898 somewhat disrespectfully about Gurschner: “Gustav Gurschner is a young Viennese who has now lived in Paris for a while. There he copied from Vallgreen, Carabin and Baffier. He was touched by the great desire of the French to make the things of our daily life artistic, and he learned that even the inconspicuous can have a faint reflection of eternal beauty. Now we see him merrily busy with lamps, bowls and brooches. One sometimes notices that he has not learned it from himself, but learned it later, but he knows how to switch to the freest and most cheerful. It is a good thing that he has now come back to Vienna: we can use him here, he can help us, he will have an effect. In Paris he might have become a mere copyist, but here he may try to express our old way with that skill” (Pias (ed.), Hermann Bahr, Kritische Schriften VI, Secession, Weimar 2007, p. 73.) This alleged "copying" led to some of the most beautiful designs of Austrian Art Nouveau, as our table lamp with Nautilus proves. The snail grows, so to speak, out of an organic foot, as if armed with tentacles.
