      Est: $2,500 - $4,500

Herbert Gurschner (1901 - 1975) Oil on Board, Signed, Measures ( 20 x 14.5 inches ) w/frame ( 24 x 19 inches ) Herbert Gurschner, who was born in the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck in 1901, received his first training at the arts and crafts school in his place of birth and then went to the Munich art academy. His oeuvre is partly shaped by his Tyrolean homeland. The main themes here are views of the surroundings and show rural life. Through his English wives he finally lives and works in London, where he frequented aristocratic, economic and cultural circles and so his artistic success with exhibition activities took the right course. He became one of the most sought-after portraitists in European society. His portraits include, among others, Lawrence of Arabia and King Gustav of Sweden. With the Second World War he finally received British citizenship and served in the army. After the war, however, his participation in exhibitions fell sharply, as he now devoted himself more to stage design. The composition of the present woman portrait is reminiscent of portraits from the Renaissance

§ Herbert Gurschner (1901-1975) Tyrol signed and titled 'H.Gurschner / Tyrol' (lower right); numbered 26/60 woodcut 11.5 x 11cm Through his paintings and prints of his native Tyrol, a historical region in the Alps of Northern Italy and western Austria, Herbert Gurschner not only depicted his homeland, but helped to define it. However, in spite of his inextricable association with the Tyrolean landscape, Gurschner spent most of his adult life living in London with his wife, Ella Dolores Erskine, a wealthy British society woman. The union proved to be commercially fertile for Gurschner who gained access to aristocratic circles and rapidly became one of the most sought-after portraitists working in London at the time. In 1939, Gurschner obtained British citizenship and, following World War II, entered into his second marriage. Effectively exiled from the patrician circles he had previously been moving within, Gurschner turned his attention away from portraiture and, instead, reinvented himself as a stage designer for prestigious institutions, including the Globe Theatre and the Royal Opera House.

He went to their parties, holidayed in the Cote d'Azur, travelled between Europe and the USA. At the same time, his Tyrolean origins remained important to him, and he thought about the "simple life" of the mountain farmers and cherished religious interests. The clash of these different worlds is palpable in the work of Gurschner, an artist in whom "several jealously struggling souls" lived. Carl Kraus – from Herbert Gurschner. Illustrated: Bystander, London, 9 November 1938. Algernon Henry Blackwood (1869–1951) was an English writer of supernatural fiction whose work is informed by an eclectic framework of ideas, ranging from Eastern mysticism, theosophy, and psychical research to psychoanalysis. When a young man Blackwood was greatly affected by his reading of Patanjali's Yoga Aphorisms and the Bhagavad Gita and was converted to Eastern wisdom. He took a great interest in the theosophy of Madame Blavatsky, whose claims of an extrasensory spirit realm became a central preoccupation. After the First World War (during which he acted as an undercover agent in Switzerland for British military intelligence) he travelled extensively and associated with P. D. Ouspensky and Georgi Gurdjieff. Altogether, Blackwood published over forty books and penned more stories and novels in the realm of the psychological, mystical and supernatural than any other contemporary.

Figure conception comparable to Albin Egger-Lienz, Tyrolean landscape artists such as Alfons Walde and Oskar Mulley. Religious and sacred themes with influences from traditional votive pictures and dance of death representations. Gurschner's talent for painting was evident early on. In 1918 he was accepted as the youngest student at the Academy in Munich. From 1920 he lived in Innsbruck's Mühlau district and exhibited together with the other artists of the "Mühlauer Kreis", Nepo, Schnegg and Lehnert. From 1925 on he undertook numerous trips to Italy, Spain and France, exhibited at the Venice Biennale and in 1929 completed an acclaimed solo exhibition at the London Fine Art Society. In 1931 the Tate Gallery bought his Annunciation. Gurschner made a living from numerous commissions for portraits and was thus associated with aristocratic, diplomatic and business circles. In 1938 he went into exile in London, where he met his second wife, Brenda. After the war, Gurschner turned to stage design, working for Covent Garden Opera, the Globe and Hammersmith Theaters. As early as 1927, Herbert Gurschner exhibited a painting in his first exhibition at the Fine Art Society in London that dealt with the "Triumph of Death". This work was created in the same year as the present smaller version and was shown a second time in 1928, when Austria was a guest exhibitor in the Italian pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In comparison to the Biennale version, our version of the "Triumph of Death" is the more new objective and artistically goes beyond it. In addition to religious pictures, Gurschner painted a number of effective, symbolic-existential pictures in this period, in which expressive tendencies were combined with new-objective pictorial means, the effect of which was close to magical realism. The popular Tyrolean painter Herbert Gurschner made many a collector's heart beat faster with his prints created in the mid-1920s. Typical scenes from everyday Tyrolean life, such as church walks, village scenes or landscapes, are worked out by Gurschner in the technique of woodcut and linocut, in which differently coloured sticks or plates are printed on top of each other. Smaller sections are often coloured by hand by the artist himself. In this way, he creates not only an exciting depth effect in these small formats, but also a great liveliness. The artist finds many of his motifs in Innsbruck and the surrounding area and on his travels to South Tyrol and Italy. His second wife, an English noblewoman, is financially independent and opens up many contacts for him in the world of the nobility, business and theatre, which provide him with invitations and well-paid portrait commissions. Although the village life that Gurschner still knew from his youth and early adulthood was becoming more and more distant, it was precisely the picturesque mountain worlds and their inhabitants that fascinated foreign buyers. Thus, pictures of his Tyrolean homeland, such as the "Dorftratsch" and the "Dorfplatz", continue to emerge. Thus, pictures of his Tyrolean homeland, such as the "Dorftratsch" and the "Dorfplatz", continue to emerge. The narrative woodcut "Dorfplatz" takes us into the world of Tyrolean village life. In "Dorfplatz", the painter looks from an elevated vantage point at the bustle of churchgoers around the church square and its surroundings. The people have dressed up in their festive costumes: The men are wearing traditional costumes and Tyrolean hats, the women are carrying out their dirndls. Gurschner, like his artist colleague Alfons Walde, knows about the sales-promoting dimension of such episodes from Tyrolean folk life. He is often brought stylistically close to Alfons Walde. He shares with him the steep view of the scenery, but replaces the pictorial rhythm with an additive composition. In contrast to Walde, he creates more densely packed groups of people, which give his pictures a more narrative character. His motifs are less monumental and crudely constructed, appear more agile and correspond in their originality to the coloured wood and linoleum cuts that helped Gurschner to become widely known in Tyrol and England. Natural landscapes and, in a broader sense, cityscapes form an important artistic challenge and a wide-ranging field of experimentation in Gurschner's work of the interwar period - whether in the form of a pencil drawing relying on contours, as a spontaneous watercolour or as a representative oil painting. Gurschner's city view focuses on the main historical sights of the picturesque city on the Salzach, which have always been part of every visitor's must-see programme: The Hohenfeste Salzburg, towering over the city, and the view from the Mönchsberg of the Altstatt with the cathedral and the baroque Kollegienkirche. Gurschner always chooses the picturesque angle of view and circles it, as it were: He surrounds the medieval fortress at the foot of the mountain with a defensive wall. He flanks the view of the Salzburg churches on both vertical sides with trees, which also function here as a classical repoussoir motif. Thus these city views appear to be pleasing vedute, which he perhaps wanted to transfer to the medium of printmaking. This is suggested by the clear disposition and the renunciation of too meticulous detail. Gurschner was perhaps also flirting here with the idea of using such views of Salzburg to find buyers for his art among the well-heeled audience of the still young Salzburg Festival, founded in 1920. Since the second Salzburg Festival took place from 2 to 23 August 1921, these drawings created in the run-up to the event could also be associated with this intention, especially since the festival city always scored points for its setting in one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. Already Hugo von Hofmannsthal, as co-founder of this Salzburg Festival, stated in 1919: "The Salzburg region is the heart of the heart of Europe.
