Andreas Gursky Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1955 -

(born 1955, Leipzig, Germany). German photographer. Shortly after Gursky was born, his family relocated to Essen, and then to Düsseldorf, West Germany in 1957. Gursky’s parents ran a commercial photography studio, but Gursky had no plans to join the business. He attended the Folkwangschule in Essen (1978-80) with a concentration in visual communication and the goal of becoming a photojournalist, but was unsuccessful with finding work. Encouraged by fellow photographer Thomas Struth, Gursky entered the prestigious Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf in 1980 and in his second year began studying photography under Bernd and Hilla Becher. Although the Becher’s preferred black and white photography, Gursky only worked in color, and with the help of his friends set up a color darkroom in 1981. By integrating the “systematically objective and rigorously conceptual”* documentary style of the Bechers’ photography with his taste for color, Gursky began to explore the contemporary culture of the world. Gursky had his first exhibition in 1981 featuring his series Pförtnerbilder (1981-5), a collection of works depicting pairs of German security guards. After graduating from the Kunstakademie in 1987, Gursky focused on photographing urban landscapes, both interior and exterior, and began to increase the size of his large format prints. Gursky had his first solo gallery show in 1988, at the Galerie Johnen & Schöttle. A rise of interest in the international art market for photography paired with the growing popularity of the Becher’s circle brought Gursky much commercial success. Gursky began the infamous May Day series (early 1990’s) in reaction to the biggest economic slump of recent history. A combination of the collapsing stock market with the growth of a dynamic drug-addicted rave scene inspired this photographic compilation. During this time, Gursky traveled to a number of international cities such as Tokyo, Los Angeles, Stockholm, Cairo and Hong Kong in order to photograph the masses – busy stock exchanges, manufacturing plants, industrial-looking apartment buildings, crowded arenas and swarming clubs. Gursky was one of the first contemporary photographers to use new digital photo editing techniques on his large format photographs. In 1999, Gursky created 99 Cent, the first in a series of photographs of discount stores, which “was quickly recognized as one of his most important works and placed in major museums around the world.”* Gursky’s retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 2001, which included the work May Day IV, confirmed him as one of the greatest artistic visionaries of his generation.

Print 3 from an edition of 10. “Although they always reveal a terrific amount, in terms of Gursky’s pictures one wishes to speak of an underlying invisibility, which organises people and crowds and makes one expect certain unspecified events.” (Rudolf Schmitz, in: Zdenek Felix (ed.), op.cit., p. 7) From a family of photographers, Andreas Gursky began his photographic training in 1977 at the Folkwangschule in Essen with the aim of working as a photojournalist. With his enrolment at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf in the autumn of 1980, however, Gursky’s photographic career took another direction: in Bernd and Hilla Becher’s class, Gursky came into contact with the art stylistic concepts of Minimal Art and Concept Art, which would shape his understanding. The time when ‘Flughafen’ was created marks a phase of artistic emancipation in which Gursky stepped out of the Becher’s charge and – as the award of ‘Master student’ attests – achieved his artistic independence. In this intensive as well as productive phase of Gursky’s work, however, only a few works withstood the artist’s strict gaze: “In the six years from 1984 to 1989, no more than three dozen pictures left” the artist’s studio, as Peter Galassi stated (Peter Galassi, Gurskys Welt, in: Idem [ed.], Andreas Gursky, exhib.cat. The Museum of Modern Art New York, Ostfildern-Ruit 2001, p. 24). For the latter, the great appeal of Gursky’s photographs lies in a “foreign” view of the familiar. The inexhaustible variety of details and coincidences are to be discovered through the curious and calm study of the views. Gursky himself uses “the metaphor of the extraterrestrial” to characterise the personal style of his pictures of the mid-1980s. Shots in which, according to Galassi, “the patterns of leisure activities in groups provide the occasion for his persistent gaze” (ibidem, p. 23).

    Est: €3,000 - €6,000

GURSKY, ANDREAS 1955 LEIPZIG Title: Centre Georges Pompidou (for Parkett 44). Date: 1995. Technique: C-Print on Kodak Professional. Measurement: 26 x 50 x 56 x 72cm. Notation: Signed, dated and numbered (verso). Publisher: Parkett-Verlag, Zurich (publisher). Number: 1/60. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Condition: The work is in a very good condition. Verso mounted. Not examined out of the frame. With Parkett magazine. "The rampant beauty of Gursky's photographs culminates in his interiors of factories or stock exchanges. That these places of labor, alienation and of the most cynically disembodied business could provide an opportunity for unparalleled visual delight, even ahead of 'nature,' is a paradox that will perhaps leave an ashen aftertaste." Jean-Pierre Criqui, Parkett no. 44, 1995. article on work and artist from Parkett edition no. 44. Explanations to the Catalogue
