ZAPATA, Emiliano (1879-1919), Mexican revolutionary leader . Large photograph inscribed and signed ("Emiliano Zapata," with large paraph), by H.T. Gutierrez, Mexico D.F. (imprint in lower left-hand corner), n.d. (inscription dated 1915). 9½ x 9 in., including original mount. In exceptionally fine, fresh condition. Bold oblique inscription and signature in light portion of image, part of the inscription and paraph extending onto the mount itself: "Dedio el presente al Sr. Gral. Domingo Arenas... Nov. 12 de 1915 Emiliano Zapata." A VERY RARE IMAGE, INSCRIBED TO A FELLOW ZAPATISTA KILLED IN 1917. A very striking image of the young revolutionary leader who played a key role in the overthrow of Porfirio Diaz in 1911, pushed for wide-ranging agrarian reforms, and in 1914 allied himself with Villa in the bitter struggle against Venustiano Carranza. Zapata is depicted in a white shirt and tie and a hand-embroidered folk jacket. A STRIKING IMAGE OF THE GREAT MEXICAN REVOLUTIONARY LEADER, OF EXTREME RARITY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED. This dramatic portrait is warmly inscribed to fellow revolutionary General Domingo Arenas Pérez (1888-1919), a dedicated Zapatista. During the turbulence after the failure of the Plan de Ayala, Arenas sought to unify the different revolutionary forces. A meeting of the military leaders of the Arenas and Zapatista factions took place on 30 August 1917. Violence erupted after Arenas and Zapatista Col. Rayon accused each other of betraying the revolutionary cause. In a confused exchange of gunfire, both Arenas and Rayon were killed. OF GREAT RARITY: no other inscribed photograph of Zapata has been sold at auction since 1970.
