John Gutmann (1905 – June 12, 1998) was a German-born American photographer and painter. Gutmann was born in 1905 in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland) to an upper-middle-class Jewish family. He earned a degree in art from Staatliche Akademie für Kunst und Kunstgewerbe Breslau [de] and moved to Berlin in 1927, earning a post-graduate degree at Preussisches Shulkollegium for Hohere Erziehung.

The snipe reads—“A few horse and wagons which are still in use meet a parking problem” I wonder if the “White Star” on the wagon is Gutmann’s sly allusion to the BLACK STAR agency, a parallel agency to PIX, started in the 1930’s.         John Gutmann (1905 – 1998) “Tattooing. Sailor’s Delight.” Tatoos on legs and arms, Honolulu. Vintage ferrotyped gelatin silver print on single weight paper, 1945, 9 3/8 x 7 ½ inches. Published in John Gutmann. The Photographer at Work. (CCP and Yale U. Press, 2009, p. 141.) There are extensive snipes on the verso about tattooing among sailors during WWII and descriptions of the tattoos that are shown. Born in Germany, Gutmann emigrated to the US in 1933. He taught at San Francisco College and San Francisco State from 1937 – 1973. He is most known for his Harlem photographs, but he traveled extensively. His photographs are in many major museums and were included in many exhibitions and books. Gutmann’s PIX stamp is on the verso. Some surface bends and folds don’t break the surface and are not seen straight on.

"John Gutmann hat wie kein anderer Fotograf vor ihm das spezifisch Amerikanische des städtischen Lebens gesehen und in Bildern festgehalten, die durch ihre kühne Komposition, ihre visuellen Mehrdeutigkeiten und ihren Ausdruck von spontanem Erleben faszinieren. Geboren 1905 in Breslau und im Umfeld des deutschen Expressionismus zum Künstler geworden, befasste er sich als Autodidakt auch mit Fotografie. Um dem Hitler-Regime zu entkommen, wanderte er 1933 nach San Francisco aus, wo er für deutsche Illustrierte fotografierte. Mit dem unvoreingenommenen Blick des Fremden beobachtete er das für ihn exotische, ja bizarre und fast surreale Leben in der Stadt und verdichtete seine Sicht zu einem Ausdruck der „wunderbaren Extravaganz des Lebens“. Sein persönlicher Stil basiert auf der „neuen fotografie“, die vor seiner Auswanderung in Deutschland en vogue war: dynamische Schrägsichten, Detailansichten und der scheinbar zufällige, schnappschussartige Blick auf das Strassenleben, der die Kontinuität von Raum und Zeit ausserhalb des Bildfensters suggeriert. Zusammen mit seiner künstlerischen Sensibilität für das Aussergewöhnliche, für das Irrationale und Poetische entstanden dadurch einzigartige Aufnahmen der amerikanischen Stadtlandschaft mit der Ikone Auto, dem Statussymbol einer von Konsum und Mobilität geprägten Kultur, im Zentrum.
