Painter, Illustrator, Sculptor, b. 1911 - d. 1987

Renato Guttuso (26 December 1911 – 18 January 1987) was an Italian painter and politician. His best-known works include Flight from Etna (1938–39), Crucifixion (1941) and La Vucciria (1974). Guttuso also designed for the theatre (including sets and costumes for Histoire du Soldat, Rome, 1940) and did illustrations for books. Those for Elizabeth David’s Italian Food (1954), introduced him to many in the English-speaking world. A fierce anti-Fascist, "he developed out of Expressionism and the harsh light of his native land to paint landscapes and social commentary."

I like the landscape of Gazzada and the circle of the Alps that I see from my terrace. I like this light and this air, free of violent provocation, but far from anonymous, which allow me to be excited by my thoughts, without taking me out of myself. I came to Velate for no special reason the first time, now I am brimming with special reasons.” (Renato Guttuso, “Il Giorno”, Milan, 6 October 1959. Excerpt from an interview with Marco Valsecchi.) After the vision of a disrupted world, here we are instead, arriving at a walk in the woods. A tiny little man on a wide path opening up under a shadow so damp and dense that it filters the light like a sieve. We are clearly in Velate and can almost smell the humid air and the intense fragrance of the undergrowth, with tall, slightly yellowish grasses already heralding autumn, and twisted trunks with leaden branches. The dense canopy of wide leaves, painted almost one by one, creates a sort of vegetal felt which the light pierces here and there like stretch marks. There is no sky, no horizon, the massive presence of the forest feels like a construction, and the dim light of an almost interminable Nordic twilight, the transparent half-light, and all these leaves like paper money, a little worn but still in circulation, lend the painting a tonality one only sees in certain Monet landscapes. Yet there is nothing impressionistic about it, least of all in the man strolling with his back to us – the painter himself – sketched with a humble, almost casual air. Cesare Brandi, 1983
