  • Amara Blanqui. 1898.
    Oct. 22, 2017

    Amara Blanqui. 1898.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Artist: HENRI GUYDO (1870-?) Size: 47 3/4 x 79 1/8 in./121 x 201 cm Affiches Camis, Paris A cordial or aperitif, Amara Blanqui was distilled with the rather odd flavor of herbs and ginger. If you have difficulty imagining such a thing, that's not surprising: we lack words for it. Guydo's art, here, accomplishes a synaesthetic conversion of taste to vision: herbal bitterness becomes the black liquorice of the dress; ginger takes the hues of hair and fruit-branch above. Ivy frames the tableau, and herbal motifs decorate her blouse; we see our delightfully tart taste-tester on the cliffs high above the Mediterranean, near Nice, where the liqueur is distilled. The fresh wind of Le Mistral and the sun fall upon us. "Altogether charming," wrote Estampe et Affiche in 1898. (Alcohol)

    Dec. 16, 2009

HENRI GUYDO (1870-?). LIQUEUR HANAPPIER. Circa 1897. 51x39 inches, 131x99 cm. Camis, Paris.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,800

HENRI GUYDO (1870-?) LIQUEUR HANAPPIER. Circa 1897. 51 1/2x39 1/4 inches, 131x99 1/2 cm. Camis, Paris. Condition B / B+: creases, abrasions and discoloration in margins and image; repaired tears and minor losses at edges; tape stain in bottom margin, affecting text; vertical and horizontal folds. Guydo was an illustrator who worked for the most prominent French humor magazines, such as L'Assiette au Beurre and Le Rire. Although four of his posters were presented in the Rheims exhibition in 1896, this poster was not one of them. It is an unrecorded and beautiful image, built, Grasset-style, around a medieval theme--even the text at the bottom is in old French. However, unlike Grasset, Guydo employs very little decorative ornamentation; his illustrations are straightforward and not weighed down with intricate details. The poster is a love story about to happen, between the subjects of the poster, and the consumer and the product as well.
