Oil on canvas Hungary, around 1960 Viktor Rafael Gyözö (1900-1981) – Hungarian painter Signed lower right ‘Rafael V’ Dimensions, framed: 102 x 131.5 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection A large work by the popular Hungarian artist; Rafael’s abstract paintings with figures fetch up to 16,000 euros on the international auction market This large oil painting by Hungarian artist Viktor Rafael Gyözö, who is primarily known for his frescoes in the former parliament building in Beirut, dates to around 1960 and shows a reclining woman. The work exhibits cubist influences, which characterise the majority of the artist’s oeuvre. The abstracted and segmented body, in warm shades of red and orange, is reminiscent of the nude paintings by Cubists such as Picasso and Braque but also of the sculptures by Henry Moore. In terms of colour the figure contrasts beautifully with the cool tones of the background. The impasto layers of colour give the image surface an appealing texture and create a certain depth. The painting by Viktor Rafael Gyözö is in good condition. The impasto colour surface shows craquelure here and there. It is signed lower right ‘Rafael V’. The simple frame shows light signs of age and wear. Framed the work measures 102 x 131.5 cm, the stretcher frame measures 90 x 120 cm.
