Gretel Haas-Gerber (1903-1998), Flower Still Life, Oil, 1960s

      Est: €1,000 - €1,300

Oil on fiberboard Germany, 1960s Gretel Haas-Gerber (1903-1998) – German painter and master student of Karl Otto Götz Signed with monogram and inscribed lower left ‘GHG OMU’ Dimensions: 62.5 x 51 cm Frame: 74.5 x 62.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Rare flower still life from the figurative and realistic picture cosmos of Gretel Haas-Gerber Gretel Haas-Gerber created a fascinating late artistic output, in which the contours of her motifs – mostly landscapes, nature studies and townscapes – received a sovereign and slightly loosened touch. The present flower still life was executed with a nuanced sense of color and reflects the artist’s graphic and at the same time picturesque approach. Condition: The painting is in very good condition, consistent with age. The fiberboard is rigidly mounted into the frame and measures 62.5 x 51 cm. The framed overall dimensions are 74.5 x 62.5 cm. Gretel Haas-Gerber (1903-1998) Gretel Haas-Gerber was born in Offenburg, where she received her early artistic training from Adolf Mangold, between 1920 and 1923. She was then able to attend the Badische Landeskunstschule in Karlsruhe as one of the first accepted women, until she moved to Munich in 1925, where she studied at the Academy under Max Dörner and Hugo von Habermann. Gretel Haas-Gerber’s early works are deeply inspired by her great idol Karl Hofer and may be classified between ‘New Objectivity’ and ‘Expressive Realism’. Between 1933 and 1948, Gretel Haas-Gerber was ostracized under the National Socialists, so that her career was abandoned until the 1950s, when she began her second creative period. In 1969 she even started a second artistic education at the Academy in Düsseldorf, where she became a master student of Karl Otto Götz. Contrary to the then current artistic tendencies towards abstraction, Gretel Haas-Gerber’s late works maintained her realistic style that she often used for social and political themes. Her works are preserved, for instance, at the Städtische Kunstsammlung Offenburg, the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf and the Museum für Neue Kunst Freiburg.
