FRANZ XAVER HABERMANN, THE TAKING DOWN OF GEORGE III STATUE, NEW YORK 1776

          Est: $2,500 - $5,000

HABERMANN, Franz Xaver, 1721-1796 (Engraver). Die Zerstoerung der Koeniglichen Bild Sauele zu Neu Yorck / La destruction de la statue royale a Nouvelle Yorck. Reverse etching with original hand color. Augsburg, [ca. 1776]. Approximately 13 1/2" x 17 1/2" sheet. "A statue of the King had been erected on the Bowling Green after the repeal of the Stamp Act. ... in the excitement engendered by the Declaration of Independence and its adoption by the Provincial Congress of New York on 9 July 1776 the royal statue was pulled down. The statue of the Earl of Chatham, a strong advocate of reconciliation, was not touched. This destruction was both a gesture of patriotic triumph and one of defiance, in a city politically divided and threatened with occupation" (BL). Five days after the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia, a pro-revolutionary group known as the New York Sons of Liberty tore down a statue of George III standing at Broadway and Bowling Green. This imaginative recreation of that event correctly shows enslaved and free Black men performing most of the labor, but dresses them in fanciful Turkish attire—a costume often worn by Black men in European art that refers to the legality of slavery in the Ottoman Empire. The Baroque architecture is more characteristic of a large European city from that era than Anglo-Dutch colonial New York, and the actual statue showed the king on horseback. Habermann who designed and etched this image was based in Augsburg and his image were soon replicated in Paris, demonstrating a broad European interest in the dramatic events taking place across the Atlantic. The print was intended to be shown on a wall or screen using a "magic lantern", an optical device that projected the image by means of candles and mirrors, a type of print known as a "Vue d'Optique."

FRANZ XAVIER HABERMANN (GERMAN, 1721-1796) AMERICAN HISTORICAL PRINT, hand-colored etching, "La Destruction De La Statue Royale A Nouvelle Yorck (The Destruction of the Royal Statue at New York)". An imaginary view of American revolutionary soldiers, assisted by free blacks and slaves, pulling down the statue of King George III at Broadway and Bowling Green, in New York on July 9, 1776. The title is engraved backwards because the work was intended to be shown on a wall or screen using a "magic lantern", an optical device that projected the image by means of candles and mirrors. This type of print is also known as a "Vue d'Optique."

With text L'Entre Triumphale De Troupes Royales a Nouvelle Yorck below the image; Together with another 18th century handcoloured engraving titled “Le Débarquement des Francois, pour l'establishment de la nouvelle colonie, dans le port de la nouvelle Caynne ou la France Equinoxialle”, 30 x 43cm, from a drawing executed by a Spanish Officer in 1762. Many of the Vues d' Optique were imaginative, crude, and inaccurate, although some were very well done. The letters above the text were deliberately reversed since these prints were designed for viewing in optical machines with a magnifying glass and a reflective mirror, which gave the viewer an illusion of depth and reversed the image.
