PATRIK HÁBL 1975 - GOLDEN MOUNTAIN

      Est: -

This painting is one of vertical bands of calligraphic landscapes, which like most of Hábl's work came about through bold experimentation. He paints on various supports, applying the paint with a roller, letting it drip, then letting it dry in the sun or freeze. He also experiments with the content. He offers the viewer the chance to observe unclear, non-material contexts, to let the hidden speak. His painting becomes a mirror of the spirit. When he speaks about the landscape, nature and naturalness, he explains that the permanence of these phenomena go fundamentally beyond that of man. Man changes, digs up, and rearranges only the material surface of things, but the spirit remains unchanged. It is not man who establishes values and writes the laws of nature. Patrik Hábl is one of the most striking faces in contemporary Czech art who works with both the painting and its installation in space. PATRIK HÁBL 1975 - A LANDSCAPE WITH CLOUDS

      Est: -

"The painting was created as a direct experience of a particular landscape in the rain. The clouds created a dramatic scenery in the horizon that reminded me of scenes from Baroque Dutch paintings", recalls the painter Patrik Hábl about the inspiration for Landscape with Clouds. The artist has made his mark on the public consciousness primarily through his monumental interventions of abstract art into important (often sacred) historical and contemporary buildings and permanent gallery exhibitions. A characteristic feature of his work, apart from its monumentality and work with space, is his long-standing interest in experimenting with painting techniques and processes, where he tirelessly tests the possibilities of the medium of painting and with endless inventiveness constantly tries to push them further. Often working without brushes, he applies paint to canvases in various ways, letting it dry, freeze, and drip. In the case of the gradually built-up and calligraphically applied layered composition of the painting Landscape with Clouds, the artist uses the so-called washed-out technique. His landscape motif here is conditioned by a monochromatic dark color palette, against which light shades contrast in the final layer, thus creating tension and drama in the whole situation. The unforgettable, deeply personal experience of the landscape is thus transferred by the painter to the canvas using a unique technique: 'the paint runs off and I tried to stop this moment and preserve the inner perception of the whole scenery. The work was exhibited in the solo exhibition Body of the Painting (2020) at the Regional Gallery of the Highlands in Jihlava and in the exhibition Expositie (2020) at the Broft Gallery in Leerdam, the Netherlands. PATRIK HÁBL 1975 - INFANTA (DIEGO VELÁZQUEZ)

      Est: -

Patrik Hábl is one of the most prominent faces of contemporary Czech paintings working with the image and its spatial placement. In exhibitions and interventions in public space, he has long been perceived as a representative of abstract painting and imaginative landscapes. The featured painting of Maria Anna of Spain after Diego Velázquez is part of a larger cycle of works, reinterpretations of world master paintings, which he has been continuously working on from the time of his studies to the present, i.e. for over 28 years. The artist himself says of the work, "the painting is painted in the same size as the original and then deconstructed in a painterly manner. I enter the painting in various ways, such as ripping out, washing out, or layering the painting further. The face becomes the motif of the painting, so the painting observes another painting, the face observes the face". The entirety of all of Patrik Hábl's reinterpreted Old Master works was presented in this year's exhibition on the top floor of the DOX Contemporary Art Center tower. In the exhibition So Many Other Presences, the artist showed an almost unknown position of his work inspired by his long-standing fascination with classical portraiture and the human face. In a condensed installation of paintings, in addition to the complexity of perceiving the reality of the contemporary world, he also referred to the cabinet-like arrangement of historical picture galleries. Interventions in old art collections and creating a dialogue with the old masters using contemporary approaches to the art are also possible concepts. A painting from Patrik Hábl's "Old Masters" series is thus appearing on the auction market for the first time. The work was exhibited in the solo exhibition So Many Other Presences (2022) at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague. Signed: Signed verso: "Infantka" (D. Velazquez) 2015-16 Hábl

      JAPANESE LANDSCAPE

      Est: -

Acrylic on canvas. Signed on reverse: “P. Habl”. The motif of a mountainous landscape inspired by travels to Asia is based on 18th century Japanese woodcuts, especially Katsushiko Hokusai's “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji”. Mountains have long represented not only a site of physical encounter with the elements of nature, but also a desire to reach the top, the journey often being more important than the destination itself. In terms of interpretation, mountains also refer to multiple layers and imagination. In this painting, Hábl first used black, brown and red color in combination with the calligraphic, structural – in fact almost three-dimensional – illusion of space, with his dense, expressive painting contrasting with dry, borderline-minimalist frugality. Patrik Hábl is one of the most striking faces in contemporary Czech art who works with both the painting and its installation in space (solo exhibitions at Dox – Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing International Art Biennale, exhibition in Kyoto, Japan, 2015). He has created a number of works for display in important historical buildings: a 15-meter installation in the church at Speinshart Monastery; an installation for the permanent exhibition at Aleš South Bohemian Gallery and a 100m2 painting that was included in his exhibition at the gallery titled “Paintings in Architecture”, 2016; a ten-meter Lenten veil for the Church of Maria am Leech, the oldest church in Graz; at the Small Fortress of the former Terezín Ghetto he encircled cell no. 41 with a painting composed of 600 figures, 2017.
